Accessibility statement: Accessibility of the Student’s digital skills learning and exam material

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

This accessibility statement explains how well the Student’s digital skills study course material complies with the Act on the Provision of Digital Services, what shortcomings there are in the accessibility of study course material and how you can give us feedback on accessibility problems.

University of Helsinki is responsible for this study course material. We want as many users as possible to be able to access our digital services. We take accessibility into account in the development of digital services.

How accessible are the websites?

The Student’s digital skills study course and exam material partly meet the A and AA level accessibility criteria required by law (WCAG criteria 2.1). Course materials have some shortcomings in accessibility, which are described in more detail below.

If you observe any issues that are not described on this page, please let us know and we will do our best to fix any shortcomings. We will respond to requests and comments as soon as possible, but no later than within two weeks.

More detailed information on technical accessibility (course material)

The Student’s digital skills study course  material is not yet fully accessible.

Content or features that are not yet accessible

Learning material:

  • There are some instructions in the learning material that are based on sensory instructions only. (WCAG 1.3.3)
  • Some of the links do not have sufficient colour contrasts. (WCAG 1.4.3)
  • Some elements do not have a visual keyboard focus indicator. (WCAG 2.4.7)
  • In some places, the screen reader and keyboard focus jumps to an illogical location (for example, the buttons in some simulation training videos move the focus to the beginning of the page). (WCAG 2.4.3)
  • Parts of the pages that are in different language do not have the language specified in the code. (WCAG 3.1.2)
  • Tables have often been used in the learning material, but they have not been marked correctly as a table, and they usually lack table headings. In some situations, tables have also been used for visual layout, even though the information is not in table format. There are shortcomings in the use of heading levels. Some heading levels have been skipped, and at some places the heading hierarchy is not consistent. Some headings are also not programmatically marked as headings. List structures are often used in the learning material, but they are not always programmatically marked as a list. (WCAG 1.3.1)
  • There are content in the top menu that appear by hovering the mouse, but they cannot be closed without moving the pointer. (WCAG 1.4.13)

An effort will be made to correct the shortcomings listed in this statement by 31.12.2024.

More detailed information on technical accessibility (exam material)

The Student’s digital skills exam material is not yet fully accessible.

Content or features that are not yet accessible

Exam material:

  • Some of the link texts are not descriptive. (WCAG 2.4.4)
  • Some important images on the exam material have alternative text descriptions that are not informative enough, and some images do not have any text description, even if the information they convey is important for completing the task. In addition, the progress of the exam performance is only communicated non-textually, and there is no equivalent for this information. (WCAG 1.1.1)
  • There are some instructions in the exam material that are based on sensory instructions only. (WCAG 1.3.3)
  • Parts of the exam material that are in different language do not have the language specified in the code. (WCAG 3.1.2)
  • The exam material has combo boxes and text fields whose labels have not been programmatically attached to the fields. The exam material has radio groups and checkbox groups in which their questions are not attached to the groups. The heading hierarchy is illogical in some places. (WCAG 1.3.1)
  • The responsiveness of the exam material for small screens is mainly done well. However, in a single question, the texts require lateral scrolling. (WCAG 1.4.10)
  • There is a small problem with parsing the markup language, mainly due to incorrect use of images presentation role. (WCAG 4.1.1)

An effort will be made to correct the shortcomings listed in this statement by 31.12.2024.

The content that is not within the scope of the applicable legislation

There are technical accessibility shortcomings in the embedded YouTube video frames which result from accessibility issues of the YouTube video player. The player can be difficult to control by screen reader users. However, YouTube video player is not subject to the requirements of the current legislation, since it is a third-party service that is not produced, funded or supervised by the service provider.

How have we tested accessibility?

The observations in this accessibility statement are based on a third-party assessment of whether the online services meet legal requirements.

This statement was prepared on 25 November 2022.
