Apply to become a tutor!

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

Are you an active and responsible student with a strong capacity for cooperation? Do you want to accumulate experience as a group leader? Do you want to meet new people and explore the international dimension of your home university? Do you want to support new students to get started with their studies?

The tutor’s job description and timetables for tutoring

As a tutor, you play a key role in welcoming new students to the university and ensuring they develop a strong commitment to the university community and their studies. As a tutor, you will act as a group leader and you will be part of the university’s guidance and counselling system along with university personnel. Tutors receive a tutoring fee of 180 euro, or 210 if they are international tutors (i.e. tutors for exchange or international bachelor's and master's programmes). Taxes, the employee's pension (TyEL) and unemployment insurance contribution are deducted from the fee. First-time tutors also receive 5 academic credits for their initial training.

Tutors will be needed at the beginning of both the spring and the autumn terms.

  • In January there are about 300-400 exchange students entering our university and starting their studies. Being an international tutor for them is a great way to get international experience and get to know students from different cultures. The working language of tutorgroups is English. Among new students there may also be students who have already obtained their studyright earlier but who are starting their studies now.
  • At the beginning of the autumn term, tutors will be needed for about 5,000 new students. Among them there are new students of both Finnish and international bachelor's and master's programmes, students from bilingual bachelor's degree programmes (KaTu / Tvex) and exchange students.

What do we look for in applicants?

The ideal tutor is an enthusiastic, responsible and enterprising student with an interest in leadership. A tutor should be familiar with the general way things work at the university. However, you don’t have to know everything before you begin — the faculties provide training for all new tutors.

If you are applying to become an international tutor for exchange students or international bachelor's and master's degree students, we require a good command of English. In addition, we also hope that our international tutors have completed their first year of study.
