If you are planning an exchange to Russia, take the following issues into account when selecting your target university:

Language proficiency: Students applying for an exchange must have at least rudimentary knowledge of Russian. The only exception is the Higher School of Economics, which offers English-language courses to those who are not proficient in Russian and ITMO University which is an exchange destination for the Faculty of Science students.

Studying: Select your destination based on what you wish to study during your exchange. The University of Helsinki offers the following bilateral exchange opportunities in Russia:

  • Russian as a foreign language courses completed on a full-time basis. 20 hours of language teaching per week at the following universities: the Saint Petersburg State University, the Moscow State University and the Kazan Federal University.
  • Courses taught in English, in addition to which you can choose to attend courses in Russian as a foreign language for a few hours a week. This is possible especially in the Higher School of Economics. Some individual English-language courses are also available in St Petersburg, Udmurt State University and in Petrozavodsk.
  • By attending regular courses taught in Russian if your proficiency in Russian is at CEFR level B2 or higher. This is possible at all target universities, with the exception of the Higher School of Economics, which requires proficiency at level C1.

Everything doesn’t always go as planned, but it all turns out well in the end. You should be active and take the initiative, both at the university and elsewhere. The locals are extremely friendly!”
