Get your master's thesis written! grant

The next opportunity to apply for the ‘Get your master’s thesis written!’ grant will be in the autumn application round 19 October - 6 November 2026.

The ‘Get your master’s thesis written!’ grant supports graduation by offering students an opportunity to spend an intensive writing period at one of the University of Helsinki research stations to complete their master’s or advanced studies thesis. The grant covers accommodation and full board for seven days at the Hyytiälä, Kilpisjärvi, Lammi or Tvärminne research station.

You are eligible to apply for the grant if you are a student in the University of Helsinki master’s programme (or licentiate programme in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine). The grant can be awarded only once for the completion of a thesis associated with your right to study. Students completing studies in commissioned programmes are not eligible to apply for the grant. 

Applications for the ‘Get your master’s thesis written!’ grant are accepted twice a year, in spring and autumn. Apply with e-form. The form is open during the application round. Log in to the form with the university username. You must provide the tentative title of the thesis in the application, briefly describe the work and its current stage and indicate the name of your supervisor(s).

If eligible applicants outnumber the available grants, the applications will be ranked according to the following criteria:

• The stage of the thesis, so that priority will be given to students who have progressed to the writing stage after having accumulated the research material or completed an equivalent part of the thesis project.
• The number of completed credits required for the degree, so that priority will be given to students whose only lacking credits from their degree come from the thesis.
• The estimated date of completing the second-cycle degree, so that priority will be given to students who are closest to their graduation date.
• Graduation within the target duration of degrees, so that priority will be given to students who will complete their degree within the target duration determined in the Universities Act.

If you receive the grant, you must book accommodation directly from the research station. Contact the research station to set an exact date. It is worth remembering that stations may have peaks at certain times (from May to September), when there might not be space for the recipients of the grant. You will also need to take care of the travel arrangements yourself and cover the travel expenses to and from the research stations. Please note also that the grant does not cover any extra service fees of the research stations, such as sauna fees. 

Students must use their grants during the period for which they were awarded:

• Grants awarded in spring application round 2026 must be used during the period between 1 July and 31 December 2026. 
• Grants to be awarded in the autumn application round 2026 must be used during the period between 1 January and 30 June 2027.
