Housing options for international Bachelor's and Master's degree students

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

To accommodate the growing number of international degree students, the University of Helsinki has reserved 76 rooms and studios from Unihome and  Hoas for Bachelor's and Master’s degree students who are moving to Finland.

The apartments are fully furnished and have excellent public transport connections. If you meet the above criteria, we strongly recommend that you apply for one of these apartments, as the rent is lower than the market price. Please note, however, that you can only rent a furnished apartment for your first year of study, after which you will need to find alternative accommodation.

Hoas has apartments throughout the capital region. Hoas aims to offer you an apartment close to or with good public transport links to your study campus, unless you request otherwise. Please state your campus or preferred location in your application. Please also note that you may be offered a different type of accommodation to the one you requested in your application.

Most furnished Hoas apartments are rooms in a shared apartment. The student rents a private, lockable room within a shared apartment. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared. There are usually 3 to 6 people sharing the apartment. The kitchens have a cooker/oven and fridge. Some apartments also have a balcony and a communal living area. Electricity, water and an internet connection are included in the rent. Please see what is included in Hoas' furnished apartments (Hoas' website).

There are separate shared apartments for each gender. If you wish to apply for a gender-neutral shared apartment, please apply for an unfurnished apartment from Hoas.

You can find more information about the apartments on the Hoas website as well as the housing offer.

If you are applying for accommodation from this quota, please do not apply for unfurnished accommodation from Hoas until you know whether you have received an offer from this quota.

Terms and conditions regarding Hoas and Unihome apartments

  • Unihome and Hoas can send you an offer only once they have received a copy of your letter of acceptance to the University of Helsinki.
  • You must pay a deposit of 500 euros when accepting the housing offer.
  • The residence period is only for the first study year with a fixed-term contract.
  • The fixed-term contract is binding and cannot be terminated earlier, which means that you must pay the rent until the end of the contract, even if you decide to move out earlier. At the end of your tenancy, you can apply for a standard unfurnished apartment from Hoas. Please note, however, that neither Unihome nor Hoas can guarantee that they will be able to offer you a property after your fixed term contract has ended.

Application steps

  1. Choose whether you want to apply for Hoas or Unihome. Do not apply for both as this will slow down the application process for everyone.
  2. Complete the application form as soon as possible, but no later than 23.59 EET on 26 May 2024. The application period for 2024 will open on 1 April 2024.
  3. Please note that Unihome and Hoas can send you an offer only once they have received a copy of your letter of acceptance to the University of Helsinki.
  4. Confirm your accommodation with Hoas or Unihome after you have received an offer of accommodation by email. You will receive further information on how to confirm your accommodation in the email from Hoas or Unihome.
