Students going to Japan can apply for the University of Helsinki's mobility grant, JASSO grant, and MEXT grant (for Japanese major students only). Japanese universities annually announce if exchange students can apply for JASSO or MEXT grants and provide application instructions. Availability varies yearly per partner university. JASSO and MEXT applications differ from MEXT applications via the Japanese Embassy. You cannot accept both the University of Helsinki's bilateral exchange and the MEXT grant via the Embassy for the same period.
Please note that student exchange period in Japan is not based on the Japanese cycle of the academic year. Exchange periods lasting a whole year begin in September or October.
You can find comprehensive instructions for going on exchange under the Study Abroad theme.
