It is important to ensure that dissertations are not unfairly overlooked in the scientific community due to shortcomings in linguistic expression. The doctoral candidate has the responsibility to see to it that the language of the dissertation fulfils academic publishing standards. You can submit your dissertation for language revision if you have written the dissertation in a language other than your native language and especially if your supervisor considers language revision necessary. In faculties with disciplines where it is common to write long, text-oriented monographs, the language revision of dissertations is usually supported by the faculty. If you aim to have the language of your dissertation checked, acquaint yourself with your home faculty’s guidelines related to language revision well in advance before the intended revision. More detailed faculty-specific instructions are available below on this page.
As a rule, language revision of the dissertation manuscript is performed only after the preliminary examination and before printing, but it may also be done before the preliminary examination.
The University of Helsinki Language Centre provides language revision services. If you wish, you may also use an external language reviser – however, please take into consideration that the language revision support provided by your home faculty may not cover expenses related to external language revision.
