Language revision of dissertations

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

It is important to ensure that dissertations are not unfairly overlooked in the scientific community due to shortcomings in linguistic expression. The doctoral candidate has the responsibility to see to it that the language of the dissertation fulfils academic publishing standards. You can submit your dissertation for language revision if you have written the dissertation in a language other than your native language and especially if your supervisor considers language revision necessary. In faculties with disciplines where it is common to write long, text-oriented monographs, the language revision of dissertations is usually supported by the faculty. If you aim to have the language of your dissertation checked, acquaint yourself with your home faculty’s guidelines related to language revision well in advance before the intended revision. More detailed faculty-specific instructions are available below on this page.

As a rule, language revision of the dissertation manuscript is performed only after the preliminary examination and before printing, but it may also be done before the preliminary examination.

The University of Helsinki Language Centre provides language revision services. If you wish, you may also use an external language reviser – however, please take into consideration that the language revision support provided by your home faculty may not cover expenses related to external language revision.

Faculty of Arts

Faculty of Arts supports language revisions done at the University Language Services in cases where the dissertation has been written in a language that is not the doctoral candidate's mother tongue. The support covers language revision costs for a maximum of 550,000 characters without spaces (the University's recommended length for a monograph is approx. 250 pages). NB. At the Language Services the amount of characters / page is counted so that 550 000 characters corresponds to 352,5 pages. Covering the costs of additional pages is the student's responsibility. It is recommended that you reserve one to two months for the revision of a doctoral dissertation, depending on the length of the text.

The profit centre code needed for the Language Services' electronic order form is H400. Please add the following information to the "additional information" field on the Language Services' electronic order form: "The Faculty of Arts covers the language revision costs up to 550,000 characters (without spaces), WBS-code 7400100". For more information on language revision, please see the Language Services Flamma-page.

In case you're writing an article-based dissertation, you can use the language revision support for articles that will be included in your dissertation. If you have the language of the articles revised one article at a time, please note that the combined number of pages checked cannot exceed the maximum limit of the support (250 pages).

The Language Services recommend that the language revision is done after the preliminary examiners have submitted their statements. However, if you are pressed for time or are unsure of the adequate quality of the language in the manuscript, the language revision can be done simultaneously with the preliminary examination or before submitting the manuscript for preliminary examination. Changes in the text, if any, will be checked separately.

Language-check for abstracts

The Faculty recommends that the language of the English-language abstracts be revised by an English-speaking language revisor. It is in the interests of the doctoral candidate to ensure that flawed language in the abstract will not deprive the dissertation of the attention it deserves.  You can have the language of your English-language abstract checked at the University Language Services for free (for further instructions, please see the Language Services' Flamma-pages). The profit centre code needed for the Language Services' electronic order form is H400 and the required wbs-code is 7400001.

Faculty of Educational Sciences

The Faculty of Educational Sciences recommends that the language of the dissertation be revised if the doctoral candidate and the supervisor consider it necessary. You can submit your dissertation for language revision if you have written the dissertation in a language other than your native language.

Note! The language revision must be accepted by the supervisor.

The Faculty pays the costs of language revision by the University’s Language Services for the articles and the summarising report of an article-based dissertation. In the case of monograph dissertations by doctoral candidates who began their studies before 31 July 2017, the Faculty pays the costs of language revision for up to 250 pages, but no more than €3,400 per doctoral candidate. For doctoral candidates who received the right to complete a doctoral degree after 31 July 2017, the Faculty pays the costs of language revision only for article-based dissertations, which means that the doctoral candidates themselves must pay all the costs of language revision for monographs.

Doctoral dissertations are preferably revised after the preliminary examiners have submitted their statements.

For more information and the order form for language revision, please see the Language Services’ Flamma site. When completing the form, mention the Faculty’s profit centre code H610 and WBS 7610003. In addition, please fill in to the form "Additional information for invoicing" your supervisor's name and confirmation on that your supervisor has accepted the language revision.

Faculty of Science

Doctoral candidates from the Faculty of Science can send their doctoral theses to translator Marina Kurten form the Department of Computer Science for language revision. She is able to revise the Introduction and Conclusions chapters of article based theses and entire monography theses. The revision is free of charge.

To agree on the revision, please contact Marina directly (kurten@cs.helsinki.fi) and let her know:

  • how many pages would need to be checked, and
  • when the revision would need to be done.

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law (Dean’s Decision 159/2017) covers the language revisions costs up to 250 pages. However, there is a maximum limit of 3400 euros per doctoral candidate. There are also certain criteria to be met in order to receive this financial support:

- the student has a study right at the faculty and s/he is an attending student
- no other support for the language revision costs is available
- support is used for monographs, summaries and articles of a doctoral dissertation, not for other publications
- support is paid only after the relevant receipts and documentation is submitted to financial administration

It is recommended that language revision is performed after a successful pre-examination. In practice, a doctoral candidate pays her/himself the costs first to the chosen language consultant, and sends an invoice afterwards to the Faculty, or the language consultant sends an invoice to the university (electronic invoicing preferred).
