Moodle is the online learning environment used at the University of Helsinki. Teachers uses it when they want an interactive online workspace for courses.

Moodle can be used to support classroom teaching or as a platform for distance learning. Moodle provides the possibility of teaching and learning flexibly as the teaching does not have to be fixed to a certain time and lecture room. Moodle can also implement blended learning - for example, teachers can make there teaching more flexible with online assignments and partially replace classroom teaching with them.

Depending on the course, the online learning environment can be used to

  • view online lectures
  • complete and submit assignments
  • participate in online discussions
  • complete online examinations and inform students about matters related to there studies.

All detailed information about your course is available on the course page in Studies Service.

Test Moodle functions in the Moodle training course. Click “Enrol me in this course” – you do not need an enrolment key. After this, you can try out, for example, submitting an assignment or taking a quiz.

How do I access the course’s Moodle area?

You can find the link to the course’s Moodle area on the course page in the Studies Service. Click the "Go to Moodle" button on the course page. You can also access course pages and Moodle areas via the Calendar. When asked, log in with your University of Helsinki username (IT-Helpdesk instruction: Using the login services).

Once the Moodle area has opened, you will also find a link to your course’s Moodle area in My courses in Moodle.

Why can’t I access the Moodle area?

This may be due to several reasons:

  • The teacher has not yet opened the Moodle area for students. Check the course page to see when the Moodle area opens. Teachers usually open the Moodle area just before the course begins. If no information is available, contact the teacher.
  • Your enrolment in the student information system Sisu has not yet been confirmed. After confirmation, wait two hours for your information to transfer from Sisu to Moodle.
  • If you have just activated your University of Helsinki user account, wait 1–3 hours for the account to start working.
  • The Moodle area requires an enrolment key. See the next.

The Moodle area access requires an enrolment key. Where can I find it?

You find the enrolment key on the course page below the "Go to Moodle" button once your enrolment has been confirmed. If the enrolment key is not shown on the course page, contact the teacher.

You will not need the enrolment key when you access to the Moodle area later. You can access the Moodle area directly via the "Go to Moodle" button on the course page or My courses in Moodle.

Moodle’s My courses view

The My courses view shows the courses in which you are currently enrolled. Filter your view using the dropdown menu, for example to show "In progress" or areas you have marked as "Starred". You can mark Moodle areas as favourites (starred) by clicking the three dots next to the course.

You can also sort your view by the Moodle areas you last accessed and choose whether you want the view as a list, as visual “cards”, or as a list that includes course descriptions.
