By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

The Open University offers courses and study modules that conform to the University of Helsinki degree programmes in almost all of the disciplines represented at the University. The studies are available to all, regardless of age or educational background.

Studies completed at the Open University can be included as part of a bachelor’s or master’s degree. However, students cannot complete a full degree at the Open University.

The Open University offers studies throughout the year in the form of web-based learning, contact teaching and independent learning. Lectures are mostly held on evenings and weekends. In addition to Finnish-language studies, some courses are offered in Swedish and English.

Registration and course fees

You can register for studies at the Open University one course at a time by clicking on the registration link in the Open University’s study programme (i.e., course page). Registration begins 45 days prior to the start of each course. You can register for and start completing certain courses more flexibly according to your own schedule.

The Open University charges a course fee of €15 per credit, which means that the fee for a five-credit course is €75. The fee is payable upon registration.



However, the Open University does not charge course fees for summer studies completed by those enrolled as attending undergraduate students of the University of Helsinki at the time of registration.

Please note that if you wish to participate in an Open University course in order to raise the grade of previously completed studies, you must always pay the study fee for the course. Before enrolment, please contact avoin-student@helsinki.fi.
