Services for researchers

  • The Helsinki University Library’s Library for researchers site includes information on services available to researchers. Helsinki University Library provides University of Helsinki researchers with not only a wide variety of materials, but also support and advice on topics such as open publishing, research data management, the enhancement of research visibility and publication metrics.
  • The website of the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK) offers information on good scientific practice and the supervision and examination of doctoral dissertations from the perspective of research ethics.
  • The Responsible Research website contains instructions for responsible research and publishing as well as the reuse of research results.
  • The Edinburgh Research Archive includes a guide on research collaboration for early career researchers, compiled by students at a summer school organised by the League of European Research Universities (LERU).
  • The Helsinki Term Bank for the Arts and Sciences focuses on specialist terminology in disciplines represented in Finland, together with translations and definitions.
  • Researcher's Guide to Business Collaboration video course is available for self-study at any time.

Career planning and funding

  • The Mela website offers information on insurance cover for grant and scholarship recipients.
  • The Aurora database lists the latest calls for funding applications in all disciplines.
  • The European Commission’s EURAXESS initiative supports researcher mobility and career development and promotes research funding.
  • Säätiöiden post doc -pooli (‘Foundations’ Post Doc Pool’) promotes the mobility of recent doctoral graduates.
  • The Fulbright Foundation supports students, researchers and other professionals with the highest academic potential.

Peer support and work methods

  • Nyyti is a nationwide non-profit association that promotes students’ mental health and ability to study.
  • The Tohtoritakuu blog (in Finnish) focuses on the writing of a doctoral thesis and provides information on upcoming writing courses and events.
  • Pomodoro is a fun and easy time-management technique popular with thesis writers.
  • You can find other University of Helsinki thesis writers in the HY jatko-opiskelijat group on Facebook. The group is an unofficial communication channel administered by doctoral researchers themselves.
  • For some humour and light-hearted encouragement from other PhD researchers, you can also see the following Facebook groups: Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD Comics), Shit Academics Say, and The Dissertation Coach.

Study psychologist services for students

The study psychologists offer individual counselling and study-related groups to degree students and doctoral researchers regarding issues such as motivation, time management, achievements, stress, coping, and thesis writing.
