Sisu instructions: graduation request as a doctor

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

You can request graduation as a doctor on the Structure of studies page when 

  • you have completed all studies included in your degree and they are correct in your primary study plan. 
  • your dissertation has been approved in the Faculty Council and the credit is visible in your study plan. 
  • you have registered as attending and 
  • your study right is valid. 

Please note these matters

  • Changes made in your study plan after submitting a graduation request no longer have an influence on your graduation request or the content of your degree certificate. 
  • If you have, for example, submitted a graduation request in the wrong degree programme or specialisation, your request will be rejected and you will be directed to edit your study plan to correspond with your study right. 

Registration of study modules

Please make sure that the study modules related to your degree have been compiled before you submit a graduation request. See the more detailed instructions for the compilation of modules on the page Registration of doctoral studies. 

Submit a graduation request

Submit a graduation request as follows: 

  1. Open the selection assistant by clicking the header line in your study plan with a picture of a garland and the text ‘parts completed’

  2. Click the ‘Request for graduation’ link in the selection assistant.

  3. Confirm the request in the pop-up window by clicking the Request for graduation button.

Fill in a graduation request  

Fill in the graduation request as follows: 

  1. Fist check your personal information, such as your name and date of birth, at the top of the application. If there are errors in the information, please contact the Student Services in order to fix the errors. 
  2. Check your contact information. Add a secondary email address (other than a helsinki.fi address). You can edit the information by clicking the Edit button next to your contact information. 
  3. Please answer the open questions related to your graduation request. For those who have completed a doctorate, whose dissertation is in English and whose public examination has been in English, a degree certificate in English will be given upon request. This is the procedure also when the dissertation and the public examination are in another language.
  4. Under Other info, you can provide further information related to graduation, if necessary.
  5. Select either ‘I will pick up the degree certificate from the university’ or ‘I want the degree certificate sent to me by mail’ as the delivery method of the degree certificate. Note! Picking up certificates is only possible if the COVID-19 situation so allows.

  6. If you are not continuing your studies in the University of Helsinki after your graduation, you will be asked if you would like to join the alumni association of the University of Helsinki.

  7. Click the Submit graduation request button. Confirm the submission in the pop-up window by clicking the Yes button.

Processing of your graduation request

You graduation request is processed in the Student Services. Once your request has been approved or rejected, you will receive a notification on Sisu’s frontpage. The notification can also be seen as a message in Sisu’s black top bar. Please note that the notification is only visible in Sisu. There will be no separate email. If you have notified that you will pick up the degree certificate from the university, you will receive a separate email when the certificate is ready to be picked up.  

Cancelling a graduation request

You can cancel a graduation request for 24 hours after the submission by opening it and by clicking the Withdraw request button. Please note that a cancelled graduation request cannot be restored and you have to submit a new request. You can find your submitted graduation request as follows: 

  1. Open My Profile from the main menu of Sisu. 
     
  2. Open the Applications and requests tab.

  3. Open the graduation request by clicking it.

  4. Click the Withdraw request button. Confirm the withdrawal in the pop-up window by clicking Yes
