The student healthcare fee must be paid by once per term by all students who are completing a Master's or Bachelor's degree at a Finnish university and have registered as attending for the term. The healthcare fee covers all services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS).

How to pay

If you are an undergraduate or graduate degree student, and have registered as attending for the academic year, you must pay a healthcare fee to the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).

  • The fee is paid once a term. Find out the deadlines and pay the fee on your own initiative. Kela will not send you an invoice.
  • When paying the fee for the spring term, you can also pay the fee for the upcoming autumn term, if you wish.
  • Paying the fee for the next spring term in the autumn is not possible, as Kela decides on the sum of the fee by calendar year.

More information, deadlines for the payments, and instructions on how to pay the fee are available on Kela's website. Please note that several exceptions apply to international students, so read the instructions carefully before paying the fee.

If you are a doctoral student or in the University of Helsinki as an exchange student, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee, since unfortunately you are not covered by the services of the Finnish Student Health Service FSHS.

Advice

If you have questions about paying the fee, we kindly ask you to contact Kela’s customer service. Kela has also put together answers to the most frequent questions on the healthcare fee on their website.

The University does not receive any information on paid fees from Kela.
