Students’ responsibilities in studies

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

Attend classes

As a student, you must attend and participate actively in classes, and complete the required studies. The course information (e.g., on the course page) indicates whether attendance is mandatory and the amount of teaching you are required to attend. Compulsory attendance can apply to a course or its component.

If you are unable to attend all required classes, the teacher may, at their discretion, provide you with separately agreed supplementary assignments.

Turn in your study-related assignments on time

The teacher must announce the required format and deadline for all study-related assignments. If you fail to return your assignment by the deadline, the teacher is not obliged to accept it. The teacher may reject your assignment and require you to retake the related classes.

Complete courses on time

More information about the schedules for completing courses can be found in the instructions for the expiry of studies.

Be honest

All forms of dishonesty and plagiarism in studies are forbidden, and all suspicions of dishonesty and plagiarism will be investigated. The University of Helsinki also employs a plagiarism recognition system. For more information, read the section on cheating and plagiarism.

Follow communications

On the front page of the Studies Service, you can find both general bulletins aimed at all students as well as bulletins from your own degree programme. Keep in mind to also follow communications sent through email. Always use your University of Helsinki email address for handling study-related matters.
