Degree-oriented studies and the Open University route | Open University

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

While the open university does not grant degrees, the studies are useful for those seeking to complete a degree. Through the open university, students can discover interesting fields of research and find out what university studies are like. It is possible to complete degree studies in advance. At the same time, students build up the knowledge and skills they will need for university studies. In addition, studies completed at the open university may be used as the basis for an application to degree studies at most faculties of the University of Helsinki.

Open university route

Studies completed at the open university can be used as a basis for applying to degree programmes at most University of Helsinki faculties. This is commonly known as the Open University route.

Students must apply for a place, one will not automatically be granted. Admission criteria and quota vary by degree programme. The selection of students is usually based on the amount of completed studies and grades. There number of student places available through the open university route is limited.

Many degree programmes require that open university studies be compiled into study modules before applying. Information on whether the studies must be registered as modules is available in the admission criteria for each degree programme. Tips for studying towards a degree

  • Have a plan and follow it systematically and with determination. Plan your time management so that you have enough time to complete your studies.
  • Select courses from the open university course catalogue which are included in the degree you would like to pursue. Your completed studies will be entered in the University of Helsinki’s student register and they may be used for a degree later.
  • If you are applying to be a degree student via the open university route, make sure to choose courses which are included in the admission criteria of the route. 
  • Please note that completed individual courses will usually expire within 10 years. However, the open university route typically requires that the relevant studies are completed within a specific timeframe. The requirements vary by degree programme.
