UniHow accessibility statement

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

This accessibility statement applies to the UniHow service of the University of Helsinki.

This accessibility statement is based on an external specialist assessment of the service carried out in June 2020. The statement will be updated as the errors identified are corrected.

This statement was created on 22 September 2020.

Is the service accessible?

In the case of features targeted at students, the service meets most of the A and AA level conformance requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1). There are more deficiencies in the features associated with survey administration. The accessibility deficiencies identified are described in detail below.

Non-accessible content in the service

Perceivability deficiencies:

  • Some text alternatives provided for screen readers are too long or not descriptive enough. (WCAG 1.1.1)
  • Features associated with survey administration are only presented as icons, in addition to which text should be used. (WCAG 1.1.1)
  • Heading levels are used inconsistently when moving from the service’s main page to sub-pages. (WCAG 1.3.1)
  • Tables included in the description of the service’s data file (a separate PDF file) have no headings, and the document has no code marking . Furthermore, some table cells have been merged, making the number of rows vary by column. (WCAG 1.3.1, 1.3.2)
  • Certain error messages are in grayscale, which hinders their perception. (WCAG 1.4.1).
  • The contrast between certain colours and the background does not meet the required standard. (WCAG 1.4.3, 1.4.11)
  • In places, parts of the information are not conveyed or are partially hidden when zooming the page. (WCAG 1.4.10).

Operability deficiencies:

  • Certain features associated with survey administration are inoperable by keyboard. (WCAG 2.1.1)
  • Several pages lack the option to bypass content repeated at the beginning of the page. (WCAG 2.4.1)
  • Several pages use the same page title. (WCAG 2.4.2)
  • Parts of the information included in student feedback and in certain features associated with survey administration are not provided to screen readers in logical order. (WCAG 2.4.3)
  • There is only a single navigation path for opening and exiting sub-pages. (WCAG 2.4.5)
  • The keyboard focus is not visible for all user interface components, or another user interface component may prevent the keyboard focus from being visible. (WCAG 2.4.7)

Understandability deficiencies:

  • Parts of the page content can include sections whose language setting is different from their human language. (WCAG 3.1.1., 3.1.2)
  • In text-editing features associated with survey administration, focusing on text fields brings up new content on the page not immediately findable by screen readers. (WCAG 3.2.1)
  • No text description of input errors made by students or survey administrators are provided, nor are input errors sufficiently identified. (WCAG 3.3.1, 3.3.3)
  • Labels associated with survey timing are missing, displaying the affected fields as empty to screen readers. (WCAG 3.3.2)

Robustness deficiencies:

  • There are deficiencies in the descriptions of buttons and certain text fields, making it impossible for screen readers to determine button function, which button is active or what to enter in a given field. (WCAG 4.1.2).
  • Screen reader users are not notified of updates to search results. (WCAG 4.1.3).
