Want to complete your doctoral degree following the old requirements?

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

The three-year transition period of the degree reform has ended on December 18, 2020. The contents of this page are archived content which has been kept public to facilitate study counselling given after the end of the transition period.

Would you rather not transfer? Are your studies about to expire? Follow the instructions on this site if you want to make sure that you will be able to complete your doctoral degree before you are transferred to the new, doctoral programme -specific degree structures and studies or study modules older than 10 years will expire.

N.B. These instructions concern you only in case the pre-examination of your doctoral thesis was launched at the Faculty Council at the latest in January 2020.

Submit your thesis for pre-examination by January 2020

If the preliminary examination of your doctoral thesis is launched at the Faculty Council at the latest in January 2020, you can complete your degree following the old, major subject -specific degree requirements even if the examination process and graduation for some reason are delayed over the end of the transfer period on December 18, 2020.

  • Finalize your manuscript in good time before the deadline and make sure that your supervisors have enough time to acquaint themselves with the final version.
  • Submit your manuscript for preliminary examination so that the examination can be launched in the Faculty Council's first meeting in January 2020. Check the exact deadline from your home faculty's instructions on submitting the thesis for pre-examination.
  • Please note that it's not a good idea to submit an unfinished manuscript "just in case". If the preliminary examiners do not recommend granting you permission to proceed to public examination, the examination process will be discontinued. After this, you are no longer entitled to graduate following the old degree requirements after the end of the transfer period.

When you are granted the permission to proceed to public examination, please note that you must arrange the public examination at the latest within 12 months from receiving the permit.

Complete your studies in time

If you want to graduate following the old, major subject -specific degree requirements, all the studies required for your doctoral degree must be completed and registered into modules before the end of the transfer period on December 18, 2020. This rule also applies to doctoral students of the Faculty of Medicine who, under normal circumstances, can complete remaining study units for the degree even after the public examination.

At most faculties, the studies needed for the degree must be completed and registered as modules already when the pre-examination is started or, at the latest, before the permission to proceed to public examination is granted. Check your faculty's rules on this in good time before January 2020 from the instructions related to submitting your dissertation for pre-examination and make sure that you have the required studies completed and registered when you submit your manuscript.
