Bulletin 10.10.2024

Electronic resources acquired by the National Library of Finland will be transferred from the University network to a new form of remote access starting 22 October. From then on, accessing the resources will require a National Library card and logging in to the National Library search service.

The remote access method for source materials and reference works acquired by the National Library will change starting 22 October. Until now, the resources have been remotely accessible using University of Helsinki credentials. Following the change, remote access will require a National Library card and logging in to the National Library search service. Once you have linked a National Library card to your account, you can log in to the search service using your Haka credentials and will be able to access e-resources in the same way as other functions that require a card. You only need to link your card to your account once.

The goal of this change is to give all customers of the National Library the opportunity to remotely access its e-resources.

Resources that can be remotely accessed using a National Library card

The resources available for this new form of remote access are source materials and reference works to support research in the humanities and social sciences. The resources are primarily from the fields of history and Russian and Eastern European studies, for example, electronic archives of foreign newspapers.

If you have saved any direct links to these resources, be sure to update those links following the change. Links leading to the pages of data providers will change along with the method of remote access.

Here’s how you can access e-resources from 22 October onward

You can find these e-resources only in the National Library search service, not in Helka anymore.

  • If you are a customer of the National Library, meaning you have a valid National Library card, you can access the resources by logging in to the National Library search service. When logging in using Haka credentials, you must first link your National Library card to your user account.
  • If you are not yet a customer of the National Library, you can find the instructions for ordering a National Library card on our website. Once you have received your library card, log in to the National Library search service using your Haka credentials and link your card to your account. After linking your card, you can access e-resources by logging in to the search service using your Haka credentials.

During user verification, the customer’s National Library card number is transferred to the verification service provider in the United Kingdom. No other personal data are transferred during authentication, and the authentication service or resource providers cannot identify the user using the transferred data.
