Problems with Moodle persist – we apologise for the challenging start to the academic year

The issues detected in the University of Helsinki digital learning environment Moodle at the start of September are still ongoing. We are working to resolve the situation as soon as possible, but unfortunately, we cannot yet provide an exact estimate of how long it will last.
The problems with Moodle have made the already busy start of the academic year especially challenging for both students and teachers – we are truly sorry for this!
Teachers are sharing course materials through alternative channels when possible. They will also inform students of any changes to course schedules, completion methods, or assignment deadlines.
If you have questions about completing a course, you may contact the teacher. However, please keep in mind that the situation is also very demanding for them – reach out only if your question is urgent.
Some teachers may use course pages to share materials. You can find the pages of your courses via the Studies Service course search.
The issue is caused by a larger-than-expected increase in the number of users along with other technical challenges, which is putting strain on the server.
You can help ease the situation slightly by avoiding unnecessary logins to Moodle, such as checking whether the service is already working normally. Instead, you can follow the current status of Moodle on the status.helsinki.fi page maintained by the IT Centre.
Status update from the University IT Centre on September 9, 2025:
- The current Moodle server’s load has been limited so that only a restricted number of University users can work in the system simultaneously. Approximately 200 users can be active within one minute, and around 2,000 within fifteen minutes.
- We have completed a new Moodle environment where the load will initially be distributed across seven servers. Load testing of the new system will take place on Tuesday, 9 September and Wednesday, 10 September 2025.
- We have identified a potential issue in the Moodle code and are obtaining a technical assessment from a Moodle consultant via our Moodle partner.
