Background information about the workshop series:

Since the 2022 pilot, Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) EDU work group and The Science Basement have been organizing together a series of three Science Communication-themed workshops each academic year. Originally, the workshops were open only for the annual HiLIFE Research Trainee Scholarship recipients (read more here), but recently we have opened up a varying amount of spots on each workshop also for the University of Helsinki BSc, MSc, Lic. students and PhD researchers in life science area to join in.

Workshop 1: Creative science writing

Nov 26th, 2024 at 15.00 - 17.00

Hall 1401 (learning center), 1st floor, Biocenter 1, Viikinkaari 9, Viikki campus

In this workshop, you will learn the key elements of a blog post, how to use storytelling in science, as well as a few good practices for peer-review.

The workshop is led by Usha Mohanraj and Vinaya Venkat.

 

Workshop 2: How to prepare for a (podcast) interview

Dec 9th, 2024 at 15.00 - 17.00

CP18 Skutsi, below ground, Biomedicum 1, Haartmaninkatu 8, Meilahti campus

In this workshop, you will learn the the best practices of presenting yourself as a researcher, how to take account the type of audience when you are answering questions about your science, and finally, tips for confident, professional and enthusiastic verbal communication.

The workshop is led by Anastasiia Mamyleva, Eleanna Asvestari and Alexis Engrand.

 

Workshop 3: Communicating science through social media

Jan 16th, 2025 at 15.00 - 17.00

Room 4024, 4th floor, Infocenter Korona, Viikinkaari 11, Viikki campus

In this workshop, you will be introduced to a few selected social media channels and will be given tips on how to utilize those in communicating your science to the audiences that this media typically reaches. We will also look at different kind of post structures and publication types to find the most suitable options for communicating your science. A couple exercises will be carried out during the workshop.

The workshop is led by Laura Suominen and Dina Alfaouri.

Kindly note that the sign-ups are binding and participation is possible only in-person (joining via Zoom is not possible). In cases of illness, please inform as soon as possible so we can then assign the spot for another eager student/researcher. The spots are offered on first come, first served basis.
