Today, we fly flags for the Sustainable Development Goals – Share your efforts for sustainability
Today, 25 September marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations. The University celebrates the day by flying flags for the Sustainable Development Goals on all campuses. Now is a good time to consider how each of us can promote these goals in our work, studies and free time.
The University is committed to promoting the UN’s 2030 Agenda, as its goals underpin our sustainability and responsibility efforts. By flying the flag for the Sustainable Development Goals, we demonstrate that we support and promote, among other things, high-quality education for all, the mitigation of climate change, peace, fair governance and responsible consumption. All actors, from states and policymakers to businesses and citizens, are needed to achieve the goals. Anyone in the University community can contribute as well.
Tips from our specialists
Tips from the specialists of the Sustainable Wellbeing unit for promoting sustainable development:
“Even small actions are relevant. For instance, we can pause in our everyday work and studies to notice who is easily marginalised in discussions and make room for their perspectives too. Such concrete acts of allyship build a more equal and inclusive University community.” – Yacine Kalke, Specialist in Social Responsibility
“All of us are needed in the University’s efforts for the climate and the environment. For example, you can consider what to put on your plate at lunch, how to use AI and your modes of travel. Such everyday choices make a difference to the carbon and biodiversity footprints of such a large organisation. Examples of activities on the campuses include volunteer sessions on the meadows and species surveys, which are open to all.” – Karoliina Koistila, Climate and Nature Specialist
“Each of us can ask ourselves how sustainability is considered in our work, whether in research project planning, teaching, facility remodelling, event organisation or project launches. It is equally important to ask what kind of positive change we wish to see our efforts generate.” – Elina Tanninen, Specialist in Sustainability and Responsibility
“An important part of sustainability is taking care of your personal wellbeing and taking action to ensure that everyone thrives at the University. Considerate everyday interaction, both formal and informal, strengthens inclusivity and learning.” – Johanna Mikkonen, Study Psychologist
“Each of us can consider accessibility in our work. For example, using clear language, providing accessible material and ensuring physical accessibility at events are actions for equity.” – Timo Valtonen, Equality Advisor, HR Specialist

The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Agenda 2030 aims to eradicate extreme poverty and promote sustainable development that equally considers the environment, the economy and people. The plan, adopted in 2015, hinges on the pledge that no one will be left behind. Sustainable development is integrally linked to the idea of planetary boundaries. Human activity must be adapted to Earth’s natural resources and the carrying capacity of nature. This idea constitutes a solid framework for the University of Helsinki’s sustainability and responsibility efforts.
