University rankings affect higher education institutions in many ways, but how reliable are they? Join us for a webinar where our experts explain how rankings work and how to use them responsibly. You can also ask questions of your own.

University rankings have many practical effects on higher education institutions, even though their effectiveness in comparing universities has been broadly questioned.

As such, rankings cannot provide reliable information on university operations. At the same time, some operational indicators used for ranking can be responsibly used in indicative comparisons.

Please join us to hear about how university rankings work, the problems associated with them, their impact on universities and how the University of Helsinki uses them. The session includes three presentations: university rankings in general, sustainability rankings in particular, and responsible use of rankings.

The discussion session will take place as a Zoom webinar on Monday, 18 May from 9.00 to 10.00. The speakers are Head of Brand and Marketing Karoliina Haikonen, Specialist Tomi Määttä from Institutional Research and Analysis unit, Sustainability and Responsibility Specialist Henna Puustinen, and Head of Development Aura Kivilaakso from Research Management Support unit.

The language of the presentations is Finnish, with simultaneous interpretation available in English. Participants can ask questions using the webinar’s Q&A feature.

Following the session, the presentation material will be published in Finnish, Swedish and English. The event will be recorded, and the recording and the material will be added to the Uni Q&A section on Flamma.
