Language anxieties and diverse learning

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

Learning difficulties or anxieties may interfere with language studies. If your previous experiences worry you or raise questions in your mind, feel free to discuss them with Language Centre's teacher tutors.

You can find more information about the individual arrangements on the page Individual arrangements support studies.

Language Centre’s courses which take into account diverse learning

Language Centre organises English and Swedish courses which take into account diverse learning:

These courses are suitable for students from all faculties and can be used to complete the second national language (Swedish) and foreign language (English) requirements for the degree.

Language Centre's teacher tutors

During their tutoring hours, the Language Centre's teacher tutors answer questions related to language examinations, the content of courses and the completion of studies.

Gráinne Hiney, the English-language teacher, and Carola Rewell-Heikkinen, the Swedish-language tutor, specialize in supervising diverse learners.

Support for fear of public speaking from study psychologists

Anxiety related to public speaking can also interfere with studies. Anxiety becomes a burden when it prevents you from participating in situations such as social events that you would otherwise be interested in, or if your anxiety makes you decide against taking a course that includes a public speaking assignment.

There are currently no English-language courses offered on the topic, but you can explore the tips compiled by the study psychologists on how to cope better with anxiety.

If you feel that social anxiety and the fear of public speaking is restricting your life, contact FSHS to book an appointment with a general practitioner or (counselling) psychologist to discuss the issue and determine the best treatment for it.
