Who can apply?

  • Students of all faculties
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s students
  • Students with English skills at least on level B2
  • Students with minimum GPA of 3,0 

Faculties not open to exchange students

  • Courses unavailable to exchange students e.g. Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Education (with some restrictions).
  • Courses offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Law are very popular. Business major (and minor) students will be given priority.
  • Exchange students can participate in courses offered by the Faculty of Law only at the level of their studies at the time of application (i.e., undergraduate courses if the student has not completed a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application, and postgraduate courses if the student has completed a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application).

What can you study here?

  • Information on courses
  • Graduate/Post-graduate courses are limited for exchange students. Consider taking upper-level undergraduate courses instead.
  • Courses in Cantonese and Mandarin can be completed alongside other courses, but exchange students cannot study only Chinese. Courses in Chinese are free of charge (subject to change) to undergraduate (Bachelor's level) exchange students, but subject to a fee to graduate exchange students (exchange students who have completed a Bachelor’s degree).

How many credits do you need to complete?

Minimum 12 credits per term. The target is 15 credits per term and the maximum is 18 credits per term.
1 Chinese University of Hong Kong credit = 2 ECTS

Housing, costs and fees

CUHK strives to provide undergraduate (Bachelor's level) exchange students with a fee-based double room in a student residence. There is a limited number of student residences for graduate students (exchange students who have completed a Bachelor’s degree).

Other important matters

  • Students who apply to a CUHK faculty that requires applicants to complete a TOELF or IELTS test (e.g. Faculty of Law) agree to complete the test at their own expense prior to the exchange.
  • Students agree to pay the administrative and other fees determined by CUHK prior to the exchange, should they be selected for the destination. 

Exchange opportunities available 

6 students for one academic year or 12 students for one term. Exchange placements will be filled evenly for both autumn and spring terms.

Faculties not open to exchange students

  • School of Business and Management is only open for Bachelor's students who are majoring in business. Students should have no more than one low or failing grade.
  • Computer science courses have high demand, thus it will be difficult for exchange students to enroll into computer science courses.

Housing, costs and fees

Undergraduate exchange students are guaranteed accommodation in university-provided housing by the sea, subject to submission of the housing application. Students will be assigned to a double (or a triple room with double occupation) in a student hall for the program duration.

Other important matters

Exchange students are normally expected to have completed 2 years of undergraduate studies by the start of the exchange.

  • Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine
  • BSc (Exercise and Health) Programme
  • Most final year project courses offered by all faculties
  • Faculty of Architecture has extremely limited spots for incoming students (considered on a case-by-case basis).
  • Courses offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (HKU Business School) are highly competitive and some courses (Course code marked with *** ) are not open to students from the University of Helsinki.

  • At least 50% of the course load must be chosen from one faculty with the remaining credits from other faculties.

Competition for housing has always been keen, but HKU strives to provide exchange students with fee-based accommodation in a student residence. The accommodation is usually in double rooms, and the fee includes meals in some residences.

Other important matters

Students agree to take the TOEFL or IELTS test at their own expense prior to the exchange, should they be selected for the destination.
