Four UniCafes will remain open throughout the summer – UniCafe Biokeskus offers local herbs and vegetables starting in August
UniCafe will be serving customers on all four campuses this summer. The UniCafes open all summer are Biokeskus, Chemicum, Kaivopiha and Meilahti.
Lunch can be enjoyed at the restaurant or taken away, and the cafeteria selection will feature smaller snacks and refreshing drinks, for example.
UniCafe offers all you need to create a nutritious breakfast. All UniCafe restaurants offer affordable café products, including sandwiches and rolls, yoghurts, juices and smoothies, small sweet treats and, of course, coffee and tea.
In the summer, you can buy lunch to go and enjoy it in the park. The most environmentally friendly way of buying takeaway food is to bring your own container. Going on a picnic? Grab a panini or baguette, fruit and a cold drink.
Green City Farm’s herbs and vegetables will fill the kitchen at UniCafe Biokeskus in August
From the beginning of August, UniCafe Biokeskus will be serving delicious fresh produce grown in local fields. Herbs and vegetables will be delivered directly to the restaurant from Perho College’s Green City Farm on the Malmi Campus.
Perho College’s Green City Farm is a unique learning environment that provides students and partners with know-how and well-being while focusing on sustainable development. UniCafe has been serving Green City Farm’s local produce since 2022 when the cooperation with Perho College began.
Green City Farm will deliver produce from the 2025 harvest to UniCafe Biokeskus two days a week until the end of the harvest season. The farm’s range includes varieties of lettuce, herbs, kale, outdoor cucumber, courgette and beetroot.
“These vegetables grown in local fields are a model of sustainable food production, because they involve organic fertilisers instead of chemical ones, less irrigation water and fewer middlemen. Local organic farming benefits both biodiversity and the climate,” says Anne Immonen, Business Director of Ylva’s restaurants.
“Preserving biodiversity and ensuring that the earth’s carrying capacity is not exceeded is a matter close to our hearts. We want to preserve natural resources for future generations and encourage people’s enthusiasm for vegetarian food. We cultivate seedlings, vegetables and herbs for our partner restaurants in an ecological way. As well as our partner restaurants, other people can also reserve products from our online shop,” says Farming Specialist Heidi Hovi-Sippola from Green City Farm.
