Would you like to deepen your knowledge of sustainability as part of your degree? The University of Helsinki offers students a wide range of opportunities to study sustainability from the perspectives of different disciplines.
Sustainability Course (SUST-001)
The multidisciplinary Sustainability Course (3 ECTS), open to all degree students at the University of Helsinki, offers an overview of key sustainability issues and ways to address them. The course is suitable for students from all disciplines and does not require any prior knowledge of the subject.

Expand your knowledge through the Una Europa Sustainability Micro-Credential
University of Helsinki students can complete the Una Europa university alliance’s Sustainability Micro-Credential (10 ECTS). The courses provide a holistic understanding of global sustainability challenges and equips students to address them. The available courses include, for example:
- ATM406 Sustainability: Social Sciences in the Face of the Anthropocene (2 ECTS)
- ATM387 Political Economy of Sustainability (2 ECTS)
- ATM388 Sustainability and the Arts (1 ECTS)

Take online courses through the Climate University network
Climate University, coordinated by the University of Helsinki, offers a wide range of online courses on climate change, sustainability and systemic change. In autumn 2026, the following University of Helsinki courses are among those available:
- ATM302 Climate.now (5 ECTS)
- ATM378 Sustainable.now (5 ECTS)
- ATM389 Living with Changing Climate (5 ECTS)

Explore the Sustainability Studies Network course offering
The University of Helsinki is a member of the Sustainability Studies Network, through which students can also complete courses related to the environment, sustainability and responsibility at other Finnish higher education institutions. The network’s eleven higher education institutions offer dozens of courses across different disciplines and degree programmes.
