Services for doctoral education

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

If you have questions about your doctoral training or studies, help is close at hand! Doctoral students receive advice from the staff of doctoral student services in the faculties, the doctoral programme officers of doctoral programmes, and the senior advisors and coordinators of doctoral schools. You can also receive general advice and study-related certificates from the customer service desks of Student Services. Moreover, the dissertation supervisor supports the doctoral students in planning doctoral studies and completing the dissertation.

Who should I turn to?

  • The faculty-level doctoral student services can advise you if you have questions about your right to study. If you forgot to register for the academic year, you wish to recommence your doctoral studies after a break or you wish to transfer to another doctoral programme, please contact your faculty’s doctoral student services. Once your dissertation is ready for a preliminary examination, your faculty’s doctoral student services staff can guide you through the examination process one step at a time.
  • The doctoral programme officers of doctoral programmes are responsible for the day-to-day running of the programmes. If you have questions about the teaching available in your doctoral programme, you wish to obtain more information on salaried doctoral student positions or, say, start a study group, please contact the doctoral programme officer of your doctoral programme.
  • The staff of each doctoral school coordinate the compulsory teaching for all students as well as various application processes for funding. If you have questions about, for example, dissertation completion grants, the travel grants offered by your doctoral school or the teaching provided in transferable skills, please contact the senior advisors and coordinators of your doctoral school.
  • Do you have ideas or wishes for your doctoral school? The thesis committee of each doctoral programme includes not only a designated doctoral programme officer, but also doctoral candidate representatives who can communicate your wishes to the thesis committee. You can find information on the student representatives of your doctoral programme on its website.
  • Your supervisor and coordinating academic can guide you in planning and completing the dissertation project and degree studies as well as integrating into the academic community. Your first point of contact should be your supervisor, particularly if you have questions relating to the substance of your studies or dissertation.
  • The University’s Student Services can provide you with attendance certificates and official transcripts of studies. Student Services also helps with questions related to registration for the academic year and changes of name or address.

Don’t know who to contact? You can always contact your faculty’s doctoral student services staff, the doctoral programme officers of doctoral programmes and the staff of your doctoral school – we are here for you. If we are unable to answer your questions, we will help you find the right person.
