Supervision is an important part of doctoral education and the completion of the doctoral degree. Each doctoral student must have at least one supervisor to assist them with the scientific content of research and to support them in their growth as independent researchers.
A well-functioning supervision relationship is important for your doctoral dissertation and graduation. If problems arise, it's important to tackle the issue as soon as possible.
The thesis committee (follow-up group) assigned for all doctoral candidates is responsible for monitoring the progress of the doctoral dissertation work as well as the quality of the degree and supervision.
The University of Helsinki uses the electronic Thessa tool for the planning, supervision and monitoring of doctoral thesis projects. With Thessa, you can plan your research project, track your progress and draw up a supervision plan with your supervisors.
Sometimes changes to the supervision arrangements are needed during the doctoral thesis project. For example, when your supervisor retires or transfers to another university, or when the topic of your thesis transforms, you might need a change of supervisor.
