Exchange opportunities in North America
By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.
Search for degree programme
When you search for a degree programme by name or by part of the name the options in the list of degree programmes below the search field is narrowed down. After this you have to choose the degree programme from the list.
You can apply for a student exchange in Canada and the United States through various exchange programmes. The University of Helsinki provides University bilateral exchange opportunities to students of all faculties, and unit bilateral exchange opportunities to students of specific disciplines at partner universities in Canada and the United States. You can also apply for an exchange period through the North2North programme, if you are interested in the Arctic region.
See the partner universities by country and programme in the instructions below. Also note any limitations to the courses available as well as other criteria for each country and university.
Information on exchange costs and language tests: the listed estimated costs for the exchange destinations are those known to us. Tuition is free for exchange students (with the exception of the University of California, Davis). However, if you participate in e.g. field or laboratory courses, these may include fees that you must pay yourself, as they are not directly tuition fees. This list is not exhaustive and the information we receive from exchange universities is often based on estimates from previous years, so we reserve the right to make changes. Please check the exchange university websites for the latest information.
For language tests, see if the exchange university requires a fee-paying language test according to the latest information we have. You do not have to take the test for the UH exchange application, but only if you are selected for an exchange. This list is not exhaustive and the information we receive from exchange universities is often based on data from previous years, so we reserve the right to make changes. In 2020, the TOEFL test cost $260 and the IELTS test cost €250.
The application period is usually in October. Read more about the Application process for exchange studies. Please note that the application period for destinations outside Europe can be up to 1½ years before the start of the exchange, so be sure to prepare early!
University of Helsinki offers the following exchange destinations in Canada:
University-wide bilateral exchange agreement (students from all faculties; any restrictions are explained in the destination details below): McGill University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Queen's University at Kingston, Trent University, Université de Montréal, Université d’Ottawa / University of Ottawa, University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, York University.
What can you study during your exchange? Our bilateral exchange agreements allow you to study, for example, your major or minor subject or a new minor subject, or to complete optional studies for your degree. Certain fields are not available to exchange students. See details under each target university.
Prospective exchange students are expected to have a grade average (all studies) of 3 or higher to be accepted to a university in North America. To some universities in Canada the average requirement is higher, required average 3,75: McGill University, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto ja University of Waterloo. Required 3,5: University of Ottawa.
Number of Courses: In Canada, an exchange student completes 4-5 courses per semester (undergraduate) or 4 courses (graduate).
Undergraduate: Our instructions are to complete the amount of studies corresponding to the full workload of the semester (30 UH points) during your exchange. In Canada, it usually corresponds to five undergraduate-level courses. In the application phase of the University of Helsinki, select five undergraduate courses for the study plan. However, if we select you for an exchange in Canada and your exchange university allows you to take one course less, that is, 4 undergraduate courses (totaling 4/5 of the total workload for the semester), UH will allow it. In that case, make sure that the validity of the Canadian Study Permit does not require five courses. (The Study Permit requirement is a new entry requirement brought about by the corona pandemic, the requirements of which may change.) However, choosing five courses is worthwhile, because if one course is not right for you or you do not get the course you want, you won't have problems from having too few courses (naturally follow the exchange destination's rules for interrupting a course).
Terms: September - December and January - April. Please note that on this page, "spring semester" refers to University of Helsinki's spring semester. In Canada, that usually corresponds to what they call the "winter semester", January to April. If a university has a "spring semester" from May to August, you cannot apply for that. Orientation in the fall term can already begin at the end of August and attendance is mandatory. The exact dates of the exchange will be in the acceptance information from the host university
Language proficiency: many universities require a TOEFL or IELTS test result, and if you need to take the test, it will cost you. However, in many cases native speakers of English or students studying in a completely English-taught degree programme are exempt from the test, so please check the exchange university's instructions.
Students must pay their accommodation and living expenses as well as travel, insurance and visa costs. Students must also pay various administrative costs which when combined can amount to a large sum. Read the exchange universities' web sites for information on the various costs.
Exchange students to British Columbia, Memorial, Ottawa, Queens, Saskatchewan, Trent, Toronto, Waterloo and York universities must purchase UHIP insurance at the price of CA$ 300 per term (changes are possible).
Finnish exchange students to Quebec need not purchase UHIP insurance because Finland and Quebec have concluded an agreement on medical care.

University of California, Davis, Global Study Program
The University of Helsinki has concluded a Study Abroad agreement with the UC Davis’s Global Study Program.
In Study Abroad, students pay tuition fees to their target university. However, they must only pay the in-state tuition fee, which is considerably lower than the fee charged from other international students.
The Global Study Program is an undergraduate (Bachelor’s level) programme, and therefore only exceptional students will be permitted to enrol in graduate (Master’s level) courses with instructor approval. Certain courses are extremely popular and may not be available, including courses in communications, economics, computer science, design, electrical engineering, food science, nutrition and others. Special exams may be required for some courses; failing the exam would prevent enrollment.
Global Study students choose from a broad range of courses in nearly all of the colleges and departments at UC Davis.
