General description

The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is Norway's international hub for Arctic sciences, situated in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. UNIS specializes in Arctic biology, geology, geophysics, and technology, providing students with hands-on fieldwork and laboratory experience. All courses are offered in English, enriching the truly international atmosphere. Each year, UNIS welcomes around 700 students, with approximately half coming from outside of Norway.

Restrictions 

Entry requirement is 60 ECTS in general natural sciences. Please see the pre-requirements for each course.

Terms 

• You can only apply for Spring semester: end of January – mid-July
• The courses run one at the time and there is a competition to get accepted. Getting a place from Helsinki does not guarantee a place on the courses.

Other important matters 

• For Erasmus funding (minimum duration 2 months), you need to take two courses. If you get accepted to only one course by UNIS, you can get Nordplus funding for your exchange.
• If you are chosen for exchange to UNIS you will be nominated to the Arctic university of Norway (UiT) and you will have to apply both to UiT and directly to UNIS.
• Exchange students can apply for student accommodation at Elvesletta student housing in Longyearbyen. Accommodation is modern and offers dedicated study rooms and WiFi, but housing is limited and assigned based on timely application. Monthly living costs in Longyearbyen are higher than mainland Norway, averaging around €1,200–€1,500, encompassing rent, food, transport, and personal expenses
• All students must complete safety training during the initial phase of their stay at UNIS. This training introduces key safety guidelines relevant to life and fieldwork in Svalbard. These guidelines serve as a foundation that studenys are expected to build upon throughout their stay.
