How are students selected for courses?

The registration method mostly used for the Language Centre courses is the standard registration in which students are selected for courses based on the courses’ selection criteria. Course’s selection criteria for registration can be, for example being a part of a certain target group (faculty or degree programme). For some courses, the course teacher selects the students on the basis of questions asked in connection with registration. Registrations will be confirmed after the enrolment period is over. In some courses (e.g. self-access courses), the used registration method is the registration with direct confirmation in which your registration will be confirmed automatically right after your registration.

In the Language Centre’s courses, you will be selected only in one of the parallel course unit of the same course. However, it is recommended that you enroll in all the course units that would be suitable for you.

In Swedish, English and native language (Finnish/Swedish) courses, certain course units are reserved for graduating students. These course units are primarily intended for graduating students, but other students can also register to them. In these course units, the course teacher selects the students on the basis of questions asked in connection with registration. However, if you are graduating in the near future, it is recommended that you enroll in all the course units that would be suitable for you.

How do I cancel my registration?

You can cancel your enrolment for course as long as the enrolment period or the extension for cancellation is valid.

If the course has already started, instead of cancelling you must discontinue the course.

Claiming your course place

Students who have been admitted to a course but who are not present at the first class lose their place in the course.

If you were not admitted to a course during the registration period, you can inquire about cancellations from the course teacher when the first class meets or via email.

If you did not register during the registration period, you may still obtain a place in a course, provided places are still available. You can inquire about place in a course from the course teacher when the first class meets or via email.

Keep the following in mind when registering for courses

  • Only register for groups in your own field or discipline (especially for courses in the second national language)
Why? The teaching material may have been chosen for a particular major subject. For example, it is not advisable that students of psychology participate in groups for craft science and textiles teachers.
  • The order of registration is not important. It makes no difference whether you register on Monday or on Sunday just before the deadline.
  • Cancel your registration if you are unable to participate in the course (to ensure that those interested in the course have a chance to take it).
Why? An uncancelled course place means an empty seat in class and unnecessary queues for courses.

NB! As a rule, groups with less than ten registered students will be cancelled.
