Study modules and their compilation

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

The compilation of a study module means that the individual courses you have completed are incorporated into a larger module, such as basic, intermediate or advanced studies. You will receive a single grade for the module as a whole. The other studies included in your degree do not form a study module. For information on the study modules required for your degree as well as the courses belonging to the modules, please see Sisu or the page Degree structure and scope of the degree on the Instructions for Students website.

Study modules are automatically sent for compilation to Student Services when you submit a graduation request in Sisu. You do not need to separately request the compilation of a module unless the module requires separate approval.

Please note that compiled modules cannot be deleted from records.

As a rule, modules can include studies completed no more than 10 years ago. Degree programmes can also decide on shorter expiry periods. Further information on the expiry of studies

Module grade

The grade for a module is determined on the basis of the completed studies to be incorporated into it so that each completed course is weighted in accordance with the relevant number of credits. If a module includes sub-modules, the overall grade is calculated based on the grades of the courses included in all sub-modules. When determining the module grade, only those completed studies that have been assessed on a scale of 0–5 will be taken into account. If more than half of the completed credits for a module have been assessed on a scale other than 0– 5, the grade of ‘pass’ will be assigned for the module.

Module grades are calculated as follows:

  • 5 (excellent), average 5.00–4.50
  • 4 (very good), average 4.49–3.50
  • 3 (good), average 3.49–2.50
  • 2 (satisfactory), average, 2.49–1.50
  • 1 (passable), average 1.49–1.00

Please note that the module grade will not be amended if you raise the grade of a course incorporated into it.

The grade for the bachelor’s thesis is taken into account when determining the overall grade for intermediate studies. The grade for the master’s thesis is taken into account when determining the overall grade for advanced studies. If the thesis has been graded on a scale other than 0–5, the thesis grade will not count towards the module grade.

If the master’s thesis has been assessed and approved before July 31, 2022, on a scale of 0-5, the student can choose if the grade is taken into account when determining the overall grade for advanced studies. It is the duty of the student to inform if he/she does not want the grade to be taken into account.

Compilation of a module in Sisu

When can a module be compiled?

A module must have the status "parts completed" in Sisu, or it cannot be compiled in connection with graduation. This means that all the courses belonging to the module must be completed and approved in Sisu. Before submitting a graduation request, make sure that all courses appear under the correct modules in your study plan.

If you need a module to be compiled before graduation, you can request its compilation in Sisu. You should ask for a compilation of a module before graduation, if any of your studies in a study module are about to expire. For detailed instructions, see Sisu instructions: Study module’s assessment request. Instructions on expiry of studies can be found here.

For further information on study modules, please contact Student Services or the coordinating teacher of the module.

Modules requiring separate approval

Some study modules require separate approval by your degree programme. These modules are indicated in Sisu with the text Approval required

Follow these instructions to apply for the approval of a module before submitting your graduation request: Instructions for applying for separate approval
