Right to study
To study at the university, you must have a right to study. This may be either the right to compete a degree or the right to complete studies which do not lead to a degree.
Duration of the degree
The University has set a target schedule during which you should complete your degree. Check the remaining duration of your degree studies in Sisu
If your right to study expires
Your faculty may grant an extension to students upon their application to complete their studies. A graduation plan is required for such an application.
Changing study tracks while pursuing a degree
You can change the study track within some of the Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes.
Right to complete a Bachelor's degree
A Bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate degree that can be completed in 34 degree programmes at the University of Helsinki.
Master's programme options
A Master’s degree is a postgraduate degree that can be completed in 60 Master’s degree programmes at the University of Helsinki.
Studies affecting unemployment benefit
You are able to apply for unemployment benefits, if it can be verified that you have ended your studies at the university.
Monitoring student progress
The aim of monitoring student progress is to support the smooth progress of their studies. In addition, the progress of your studies is monitored and supported, for example, with the help of PSP supervision.

The notification of forfeiture is binding and final.

The faculties usually have a date in spring before when you can apply for an extension. But there is flexibility in the application. Applications submitted before the given date will be processed before the end of the academic year. You can continuously apply for an extension. The processing time is usually a few weeks.
If you are planning on taking a break from your studies, you should apply for an extension only when you are planning on actively pursuing your studies again. An extension can be granted also after your study right has ended.
