Attendance registration of doctoral students

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

All degree students must register as attending or non-attending for each study right every academic year. Register as an attending student for those study rights, in which you are planning to complete studies during the academic year. If you register for a study right in Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, you need to pay the Student Union fee.

The Student Union membership fee is optional for doctoral students.

Registering as an attending student for academic year 2021–2022

The registration period for the academic year 2021–2022 is from 1 June to 31 August 2021.

If you have a valid username for the University network, you can register through Oili.

NB! The usernames of all students who registered as non-attending for the academic year 2020–2021 have been automatically activated to enable annual registration. The automatic activation will be valid until 31 August 2021. Please note that the usernames are temporarily activated solely for the purpose of annual registration. If you intend to register as non-attending for the academic year 2021–2022, you are not allowed to e.g. register for courses, even though the activation of your user account temporarily makes it possible.

If you do not have a University of Helsinki username you can activate your username here. After doing that you can register through Oili.

If you cannot activate your username, please contact Student Services.

If you don’t have an official Finnish personal identity number or you have not yet informed it for student register, please make your registration in person by sending email to studentinfo@helsinki.fi or by visiting the Student Services for registration.

NB! The University has given up the doctoral study progress monitoring process (jatko-opintojen rekisteriseuranta), previously in use since 2006. No new students are picked for study progress monitoring in the spring of 2021, and new applications related to study progress monitoring need no longer be submitted by anyone.

All attendance registration blocks placed during previous rounds of study monitoring will be removed during the spring semester and no new registration blocks will be introduced. Students who have previously been granted an extension related to study monitoring can register as attending for academic year 2021–2022 even if their previous extension would have been coming to an end at the end of the current academic year.

The practice of reporting the full-/part-time nature (activity percentage) of doctoral studies each year as a part attendance registration is also given up. When you register as attending for the academic year 2021–2022, you no longer need to include an activity estimate. Read more about the changes to doctoral study progress monitoring.

Student Union membership fee for academic year 2021–2022

The Student Union membership fee is voluntary for doctoral students.

The registration period for the academic year 2021–2022 is from 1 June to 31 August 2021.

If you want to join the Student Union for the full academic year or just the autumn term, you can pay the membership fee when you register as an attending student. If you register through Oili, you can pay the fee through an online bank following the instructions in Oili. Your membership will then be immediately entered into the Student Register.

If you have already registered as attending, without joining the Student Union, and later decide to join for either the autumn term or the full academic year, you will have to pay the membership fee. Once you have paid the fee, send the receipt to the Student Services.

Registering as a non-attending student for academic year 2021–2022

You will have to register between 1 June and 31 August 2021, even if you intend to be a non-attending student.

You can register as a non-attending student through Oili if you have a valid username for the University network, or at Student Services either via email to studentinfo@helsinki.fi or in person. If you register via email, make sure to indicate either your student number or date of birth in your message. Emails received no later than at 23.59 on 31 August 2021 will be accepted. You will receive a confirmation when your email has been processed.

If you register as non-attending and plan to have a break from your doctoral studies, don't forget to keep your supervisors, your responsible person and the possible members of your thesis committee updated of your plans.

Did you forget to register?

If you do not register as attending or non-attending during the registration period (1 June – 31 August), you will lose your study right.

If you forgot to register but want to reinstate your doctoral study right and register as attending or non-attending during the same academic year (by 31 July), you can do so simply by paying the re-enrolment fee prescribed by the University and sending the receipt to the Student Services.

If your studies have been on hold for a longer time and it has been more than one academic year since you last registered at the University, you must apply for the reinstatement of your study right from your faculty.

Detailed instructions on how to apply for readmission and pay the re-enrolment fee are available in the instructions on resuming doctoral studies.
