En student som beviljats studierätt via det bredare sökmålet kan ansöka om byte till studieinriktningen socialt arbete och tvärtom.

Ansökan om att få byta inriktning kan göras i fri form och riktas till Svenska social- och kommunalhögskolans rektor. En förutsättning för byte är därtill att ämnesföreståndaren förordar anhållan. Ifall ämnet inte kan ta emot alla som vid en ansökningsomgång önskar byta huvudämne, tas de sökande i prioritet enligt vitsord. En studerande kan beviljas rätt att byta inriktning om studenten avlagt programmets grundstudier (för ansökan till socialt arbete bör grundstudierna avläggas enligt inriktningen socialt arbete) med minst betyget 3 i medeltal.

Opintosuuntaa voi vaihtaa, mutta silloin voit joutua tekemään lisäopintoja, jotta uuden opintosuunnan opintojen pohjatietosi riittävät opinnoista suoriutumiseen.

Maataloustieteiden kandiohjelmassa ei ole virallisia opintosuuntia, mutta siinä on viisi tulevia maataloustieteiden maisteriohjelman opintosuuntia vastaavaa moduulia (45 op), joista kandiopiskelijat valitsevat ensimmäisen opiskeluvuotensa keväällä yhden moduulin. Jos opiskelija haluaa myöhemmin vaihtaa valitsemansa opintosuunnan mukaisen moduulin toiseksi moduuliksi, voi hän hakea vaihtoa yhtäaikaisesti ensimmäisen vuoden hakijoiden kanssa keväisin. Jos moduulien kiintiöt eivät täyty ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijoista, kiintiöihin sisällytetään ne edellisten vuosien opiskelijat, jotka ovat hakeneet moduulien vaihtoa.

Ne opiskelijat, jotka eivät ole hakeneet mihinkään opintosuunnan mukaiseen moduuliin ensimmäisenä opiskeluvuotenaan, rinnastetaan moduulin vaihtajiin.

Moduulien kiintiöt ovat vuosittain KTT 30, KEL 25, AGTEK 12, MAE 15, MAA 5. Moduulien kiintiöt voivat ylittyä vuosittain enintään 20%:lla ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijoista tai ensimmäisen vuoden ja moduulia vaihtavien opiskelijoiden yhteismäärästä. Jos moduulia vaihtavia opiskelijoita joudutaan karsimaan, se tehdään opintomenestyksen perusteella. Opintomenestys arvioidaan maataloustieteiden kandidaatin tutkintoon kuuluvien kurssien arvosanojen painotettuna keskiarvona sekä opintopistemääränä läsnäoloperiodia kohti. Moduulin vaihtoa hakevilta voidaan pyytää myös motivaatiokirje sekä jättää valitsematta hakijat, joiden opintomenestys tai -motivaatio ei ole riittävä.

Opiskelija voi vaihtaa ilmoittamaansa opintosuuntaa keskustelemalla asiasta molempien opintosuuntien opinto-ohjaus- ja opiskelutaitovastaavan kanssa sekä laatimalla uuden henkilökohtaisen opintosuunnitelman. Keskustelun ja opintosuunnitelman perusteella opinto-ohjaus- ja opiskelutaitovastaavat joko puoltavat tai eivät puolla opintosuunnan vaihtamista. Puoltokäsittelyssä otetaan huomioon opintojen eteneminen, suoritettujen opintojen määrä (sekä nykyisessä että vaihdon kohteena olevassa opintosuunnassa), valittu toinen opetettava aine sekä opintosuunnitelman realistisuus. Vaihtoa ei puolleta tapauksissa, joissa tutkinnon suoritusaika merkittävästi pidentyisi opintosuunnan vaihdosta johtuen. Opiskelijan ei ole mahdollista vaihtaa opintosuuntaa sen jälkeen, kun hänen tutkintoonsa kuuluva tutkielma on hyväksytty ja arvioitu.

Opiskelija voi siirtyä opiskelemaan kirkkojen ja uskonnollisten yhteisöjen asiantuntijatyön opintosuunnassa omalla ilmoituksellaan opintoneuvontaan. Opetus- ja kasvatustehtävien opintosuuntaan siirtymisen ehtona on suoritetut opettajan pedagogiset opinnot tai oikeus suorittaa opettajan pedagogiset opinnot. Opiskelijan siirtyy tähän opintosuuntaan automaattisesti saadessaan opinto-oikeuden opettajan pedagogisiin opintoihin. Mikäli opiskelija siirtyy kirkkojen ja uskonnollisten yhteisöjen asiantuntijatyön opintosuuntaan, hän opiskelee klassisia kieliä 30 op (heprea, kreikka, latina, á 10 op). Tässä opintosuunnassa opiskelevan ei ole pakollista suorittaa opintokokonaisuutta toisista koulutusohjelmista ja hänellä on valinnaisia opintoja tutkinnossaan 40 op. 

Mikäli opiskelija siirtyy opetus- ja kasvatustehtävien asiantuntijatyön opintosuuntaan, hän tekee valinnaisten opintojen sijaan toisen opetettavan aineen opinnot valitsemassaan aineessa (60 op). Opiskelija siirtyy tähän opintosuuntaan saadessaan oikeuden opettajan pedagogisiin opintoihin. Haku opettajan pedagogisiin opintoihin on vuosittain.

Koulutusohjelman suuntautumisvaihtoehtoa voi vaihtaa vapaasti kandinopintojen aikana. Suuntautumisvaihtoehdon valinnassa on huomioitava, että ensimmäisenä ja toisena vuotena suoritettavat opinnot muodostavat pohjatiedot myöhemmille opinnoille. Myöhemmässä vaiheessa suoritettaville opintojaksoille voidaan vaatia edeltäviä opintoja tai näitä vastaavaa osaamista, jotta kurssille voi osallistua ja opinnoista pystyy suoriutumaan menestyksellisesti.

You can change the study track by updating your study plan so that it fills in the criteria of the new study track and is suitable for the new specialization. The new study plan has to be accepted by your Academic mentor, head of the programme or the professor in charge of the new specialization.

NB: Changing of the study tack isn't possible after your Master's thesis has been graded and accepted.

There are no study tracks in Master’s Programme in Data Science. The Master's programme courses are grouped into thematic modules of 15 credits or more, but courses can be freely taken from any modules.

There are two specializations in ENS programme i.e. Humanities track and Social Sciences track. When you applied to the ENS programme you chose your specialization, and you will graduate accordingly with a Master of Arts degree (M.A.) or a Master of Social Sciences degree (M. Soc. Sc.). It is not possible to change study tracks.

There are three tracks in GPC programme:

• Global Political Economy
• Governance, Organizations and Communication
• Media and Democracy

When you apply to GPC programme you already chose your track.

Bytet innebär att specialiseringsstudierna omfattar vissa bestämda studieavsnitt enligt den nya studieinriktningen. På det sättet går bytet av studieinriktningen mer flytande och studenten behärskar bättre specialiteterna inom den nya studieinriktningen.

Myös maantieteen aineenopettajaksi opiskelevat valitsevat maisterivaiheessa sen maantieteen opintosuunnista, johon haluavat erikoistua.

You can change your study track, but the change has to be discussed with and accepted by the teacher responsible for the receiving study line.

Koulutusohjelmassa ei ole varsinaisia opintosuuntia. Temaattiset kokonaisuudet (julkisoikeus, yksityisoikeus I, yksityisoikeus II, rikos, prosessi, hallinto, ympäristö, talous, oikeus ja yhteiskunta sekä oikeuden yleistieteet) ohjaavat valinnaisten opintojen valintaa, mutta opiskelija saa suorittaa valintansa mukaisen yhdistelmän valinnaisia opintoja.

Opiskelija voi siirtyä opiskelemaan kirkkojen ja uskonnollisten yhteisöjen asiantuntijatyön opintosuunnassa omalla ilmoituksellaan opintoneuvontaan. Valmistuessaan teologian maisteriksi hänellä tulee olla teologian kandidaatin tutkinnossa tai sen lisäksi suoritettuna opintosuunnan pakolliset klassisten kielten opinnot 30 op (heprea, kreikka, latina).

Opiskelija, joka on saanut tutkinnonsuoritusoikeuden vain teologian maisterin tutkintoon (maisterivalinta), voi siirtyä opiskelemaan kirkkojen ja uskonnollisten yhteisöjen asiantuntijatyön opintosuunnassa omalla ilmoituksellaan opintoneuvontaan. Mikäli opiskelija haluaa saada opinnoillaan kelpoisuuden Suomen ev.lut.kirkon papin/lehtorin virkaan, hänellä tulee valmistuessaan teologian maisteriksi olla teologian maisterin tutkinnossa tai sen lisäksi suoritettuna kelpoisuuteen vaadittavat opinnot eli 100 op teologisia opintoja, 10 op uskontotieteellisiä opintoja, 10-30 op klassisia kieliä ja soveltavat opinnot 20 op.

Opetus- ja kasvatustehtävien opintosuuntaan siirtymisen ehtona on suoritetut opettajan pedagogiset opinnot tai oikeus suorittaa opettajan pedagogiset opinnot. Opiskelijan siirtyy tähän opintosuuntaan automaattisesti saadessaan opinto-oikeuden opettajan pedagogisiin opintoihin. The study tracks in the Master’s Programme in Computer Science are Algorithms, Networking and services, and Software systems. Students can select any of these tracks according to their preferences at the beginning of studies. The study track determines which courses the students should take. The tentative choice of the track is good to make during the first Autumn, but changing the track is possible until the Master's thesis topic is selected.

The programme has two study tracks: 1.  Translational Research 2. Health Industry and Innovations. The study track can be chosen and changed during studies by creating an acceptable primary study plan for the track chosen. If the track is changed during studies, attention must be paid to the differences in the obligatory and alternative studies for each study track.

Choice of study track: when and how is it selected, and what should students consider?

In the Master's Programme, you will choose one of two study tracks: the Environmental Change study track or the Global Sustainability study track. The study track is selected already at the application stage. A change of study track is possible only by decision of the Programme Steering Group.

Requests to change study track must be submitted using the e-form that will be published on this page in October 2026, no later than 1 January or 1 May. Applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the Programme Steering Group in January and May, and applicants will be informed of the decision personally.

A maximum of three students per year may transfer into each study track. When requesting a change of study track, you must provide:

• a justification for the requested change
• a list of 30 ECTS credits of studies relevant to the target study track (which may include a combination of bachelor's- and master's-level courses)
• a study plan aligned with the new study track
• an up-to-date transcript of records

Maisteriohjelmassa valitset jo hakuvaiheessa yhden kahdesta opintosuunnasta: ihmisen ravitsemuksen opintosuunnan tai ruokakäyttäytymisen opintosuunnan. Opintosuuntaa voi vaihtaa ainoastaan johtoryhmän päätöksellä.   

Eläinlääketieteen lisensiaatin koulutusohjelma on laaja-alainen ja sen pohjalta on mahdollista toimia kaikilla eläinlääketieteen osa-alueilla. Koulutusohjelma ei sisällä opintosuuntia, mutta sinulla on mahdollisuus suunnata opintojasi jonkin verran kiinnostuksesi mukaisesti valinnaisten opintojen ja eläinlääketieteen lisensiaatintutkielman kautta.

It's possible to change study track from forest economics, business and society  to forest ecology and management  depending on your thesis subject. You need to discuss about the change with a guiding teacher from the study track/specialisation area you intend to change to. 

If you agree about change of study track with the teacher, inform also planning officer Maria Niemelä about the change so she will put on the information to Sisu.

AGRI-maisteriohjelmassa opintosuunnan vaihto MAAT-kandiohjelmasta valmistuneelle on mahdollista seuraavin ehdoin:

MAAT-kandidaatin tutkinnon suorittanut opiskelija voi vaihtaa opintosuunnan AGRI-maisteriohjelman sisällä myös muuhun kuin kandidaatin tutkinnossa suorittamansa moduulin (45 op) mukaiseen opintosuuntaan. Vaihtaminen edellyttää, että hän on suorittanut vähintään 25 opintopistettä myös sen opintosuunnan kandivaiheen moduulin kursseja, johon hän haluaa maisterivaiheessa vaihtaa. Lisäksi vaihtajan tulee suorittaa vaihdon kohteena olevan opintosuunnan maisterivaiheen kurssien esivaatimuksina olevat kurssit, jos niitä ei ole kandivaiheessa suoritettu.

AGRI-maisteriohjelmassa opintosuunnan vaihto erillisessä maisterihaussa (talvihaussa) valituille on mahdollista tapauskohtaisesti (sovitaan joryssa tapauskohtaisesti):

Erillisessä maisterihaussa (talvihaussa) valittu opiskelija voi hakea opintosuunnan vaihtoa AGRI-maisteriohjelman sisällä ottamalla yhteyttä AGRI-johtajaan sekä uuden ja vanhan opintosuunnan vastuuopettajaan. Uuden opintosuunnan vastuuopettaja esittää joko vaihdon hyväksymistä tai sen hylkäämistä tapauskohtaisesti AGRI-johtoryhmälle. Johtoryhmä hyväksyy/hylkää esityksen ja hyväksymistapauksessa tieto opintosuunnan vaihdosta lähetetään viikki-student –osoitteeseen.

General information about switching between bachelor's programmes

A student at the University of Helsinki pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree can transfer to the Bachelor's Programme in Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geosciences, or the Bachelor's Programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

The Bachelor's Programme in Science (BSc) is not eligible for transfer. Transfers to or from the Bachelor's Programme in Science are always applied for through the main application process.

A student switching Bachelor's programmes will not be granted a new study right. Instead, the original registered study right will be updated to the new programme. The start date of the study right remains unchanged. The change of the Bachelor's programme will take effect from the beginning of the semester following the application period (1 January or 1 August).

The study right in the new Bachelor's programme applies to the current curriculum period. You can check the curriculum periods of your target Bachelor's programme using the degree structure engine. Select the degree programme and the academic year in question from the drop-down menu.

Requirements for switching between bachelor's programmes

Students switching between bachelor's programmes are required to have completed at least two separate basic study modules worth 25 credits each: one in the original bachelor's programme and one in the bachelor's programme being applied to. The studies do not need to be compiled into a complete module. When evaluating applications, the University of Helsinki rules on the expiration of studies are taken into account. The studies used as the basis for the application must be applicable to the target programme's degree for three academic years. The credits required for the application must be in the student register by the application deadline. It is not possible for a student to change their Bachelor's programme after the thesis included in the degree has been accepted and evaluated.

Students switching to the Bachelor's Programme in Geography are also required a grade average of 3,5/5 or more in basic studies in geography. In the Bachelor's Programme in Geography, a maximum of three students are admitted in the spring application period and a maximum of three in the fall application period.  The admission is based on the grade average in the basic studies in geography. In case of a tie, the admission will be based on the grade of the course MAA-102.

Students switching to the Bachelor's Programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are also required to have passed the subject teacher's selection exam. More detailed information about the subject teacher selection exam can be found in the selection criteria for the joint application on the Studyinfo service. The subject teacher selection exam is only organised in the spring, meaning that a transfer to the Bachelor's Programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry can only take effect from the autumn semester onwards. A maximum of 10 transferring students are admitted per year.

Application period and form

The application period for switching bachelor's programmes is arranged two times a year. The application forms are available in Finnish and Swedish. The application period for spring 2026 was 15.2.-15.5.2026. The application period for fall 2026 is 15.8.-15.11.2026.

In the Master's Programme in Urban Studies and Planning, students choose their study track during the first Autumn semester. Study track specific studies are completed during Spring semester. Students can change their study track by making another personal study plan, which is accepted by the student's PSP teacher.

The study programme has three study tracks: USP Peoples, USP Plans and USP Systems. You can read more about the study tracks in the programme's website.

Bachelor's Programme in Science has four study tracks:

• Chemistry
• Computer and data science
• Mathematics and statistics 
• Physics

Study track will be chosen in the first spring of the BSc studies but you can plan your study track already when applying to the programme. Personal Study Plan (PSP) has a key role while planning your studies and eventually future career. 

It is possible to change the study track during the BSc studies. In that case you should update your study plan and discuss with your PSP counsellor about your plans.

The study track is chosen at the end of the first year, but students can later request to change their study track through an e-form that is open every year in October and April. The e-form will be added to this page in autumn 2027.

It is not possible to change your study track after you have completed your bachelor's thesis.

Students who have applied for an extension to their study right also can no longer change their study track.

Students cannot change their study track more often than once per academic year.

Decision and timeline

The dean of the faculty responsible for the study track to which you want to change makes the decision about the request to change your study track in LAS.

The requests will be processed and decided by the dean of the degree-granting faculty the month after the request has been submitted (every year in November/May) and students will be notified about the decisions via e-mail by December/June. The study track information will be entered into Sisu before the start of the next semester.

Submitting a request for rectification

If you believe that the decision is incorrect, you can request a rectification of the decision. The request should be addressed to the dean of the faculty responsible for the study track to which the student wishes to change and needs to be submitted to HelsinkiUni Help within 14 days of when the student was notified of the decision. The student is deemed to have been notified of the decision three days after the decision was sent.

The purpose of the rectification procedure is to give you the opportunity to appeal against an error that occurred in the decision-making process to have the incorrect decision corrected. The decision can only be rectified if there has been an error in the process and the error justifies the rectification of the decision.
