Forgotten registration and re-enrolment fee

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

If you do not register for attendance or non-attendance during the registration period, you will lose your study right at the University of Helsinki. The process for reactivating your study right depends on the timing of your application for readmission. Please note that if you fail to register as either attending or non-attending, the elapsed time is included in your target study time.

Returning during the academic year in which you forgot to register

If, after having failed to register as an attending or non-attending student, you wish to do so during the same academic year (i.e., by 31 July), you need not apply to your faculty for the reinstatement of your right to study. You need only pay the re-enrolment fee and, as Bachelor's or Master's degree student, when registering for attendance, the Student Union membership fee.

Submit the receipts of payment to Student Services: studentinfo@helsinki.fi. Please remember to specify which study rights you will be registering for and your student number or date of birth in your message.

NB! When registering during the spring term, pay the Student Union fee covering only the spring term.

Returning later

If you do not pay the re-enrolment fee and register during the same academic year by 31 July, and instead register during the following academic year, you must first apply to your faculty for the reinstatement of your study right.

Once the faculty has reactivated your study right, you have to pay both the re-enrolment fee and the Student Union fee, and send the receipts of the payments to Student Services. Please wait until the faculty's decision before paying the fee.

A printout from your online bank is accepted as a receipt if it includes the Archive ID. If you have a readmission decision from your faculty, remember to include it as well.

Re-enrolment fee

The re-enrolment fee is EUR 35 per study right. The fee must be paid to the University of Helsinki account:

Re-enrolment fee needs to be paid

If you are degree student in a program with restricted duration of the study right and you have been granted extension when it has ended, please read the instructions about registering when granted extension to study right and check if you need to pay the re-enrolment fee.

Re-enrolment fee need not to be paid

You don't need to pay the re-enrolment fee if you are not a degree student, but have missed the annual registration.

Examples of this kind of studies are

  • specialist studies in Medicine and Dentistry. Note that since 1 April 2023 there is no longer a separate annual registration in these programs.
  • specific training in General Medical Practice
  • specific training for specialists in Medicine
  • specialist studies in Veterinary Medicine which have started 31 August 2023 or later
  • non-degree teacher education studies
