Sisu instructions: Updating a version of a course or a study module in the study plan

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

Before changing versions in your study plan, please check the Personal study plan page for your degree programme's instructions. You can also ask for advice from the Student services.

It is not recommended to change your study plan to a new one lightly, because not all applications, decisions and comments possibly related to your study plan will transfer to the new study plan.

Usually, it is enough if you change the version of a section of your study plan. Changing the version technically means that you are updating a section of your study plan to correspond with a newer curriculum period. This way other sections of your plan will not change.

Updated March 27, 2024: At the top of your study plan, you will see a message if there are any courses to be updated. The link in the message will open a list of courses that are available for updating and allow you to change their versions.

New version?

When the content of your studies change, your degree programme will make a new version of the studies. For example, if courses that are included in a specific study module change, a new version of the module can be made. Degree programmes, study modules and courses can all have new versions. Most commonly, changing the version is beneficial regarding study modules and sections of a study plan.

You can choose a newer version of the section of the plan of your choice for your study plan if such has been made and the structure of your degree programme allows it. You can change the version if:

  • Your study right is valid at the same time as the version of your choice.
  • The version of your choice is newer than the SP period of your study plan. For example, if you have made your plan for the SP period of the academic year 2022–23, you can choose a version that is for the academic year 2023–24 for a section of your plan. You cannot choose a version older than the version for the 2022–23 academic year.
  • The structure of your study plan allows the change. This needs to be confirmed with your degree programme.

If you change the version of a course, you have to select the completion method for the course again.

Changing the version of a study module

Changing the version of a study module will change your plan only for the part of this specific study module, and the change will not affect the contents of your study plan in any other way. If you are changing the version of a module, you will have to resubmit applications regarding deviation from the pre-determined structure, and possible separate approval has to be done again. You can change the version of your study module in the following situations:

  • The curriculum period changes and you have not completed or have only partially completed a certain module
  • You have modules in your plan whose content you wish to keep unchanged
  • It is not possible to complete the module in accordance with the old version
  • All the requirements of your degree programme are still fulfilled after you change the version

If you wish, you can always restore the module’s version back to the way it was before. You can also first change the module’s version to a new version and then restore the old version for those courses that you have already completed. Change the version of a study module on the Structure of studies page as follows:

  1. Open the study module’s brochure by clicking the code under the name of the study module.
Screenshot of a module in the study plan.

  2. Click the version menu under the name of the module. Select the version you want from the drop-down menu.

Screen capture of the notification for confirmation of the version change

  4. You will be notified of the consequences of the version change. You can read more about the consequences in the chapter New version? on this page. In the notification, you can choose whether
    1. you want to copy the current study plan as a new one and use the new version only in the new plan, so that no changes will be made to the current study plan, or
    2. continue to change the version to the current study plan.
Screen capture of the notification for confirmation of the version change

Changing the version of a course

If you change the version of a course, you have to select the completion method for the course again. You can change the version of a course in the following situations:

  • The curriculum period changes and you have individual courses you have not completed
  • It is not possible to complete the course in accordance with the old version
  • The requirements of the study module are still fulfilled after you change the version or you agree on a special arrangement with your supervisor.

Change the version of a course by following the instructions below. Partial credits that you have already completed are shown and are fit to be a part of the new version circumstantially. If you wish, you can always restore the course’s version back to the way it was before.

Change version via a notification in the plan

If your plan has courses that can be updated, you will see a message at the top of the plan saying "Your study plan includes courses that have a version available for the current curriculum period. Changing the version of a degree programme

If you change the version of a degree programme, you will have to readjust selections, applications and decisions regarding deviation from the pre-determined structure and modules that require separate approval. The comments added to your study plan will remain. You can change the version of your degree programme in the following situations:

  • You have completed a Bachelor’s degree in accordance with an old curriculum period and you wish to start a Master’s degree in accordance with a newer curriculum period.
  • It is no longer possible to complete studies in accordance with an old version (for example, the transition period of an old curriculum ends)
  • Your degree is almost entirely uncompleted.

If you wish, you can always restore the degree programme’s version back to the way it was before. You can also first change the degree programme’s version to a newer version and then restore the old version for those study modules that you have already completed.
