By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

Student advice is available both online and on all four campuses. You can reach all University support and advice services through HelsinkiUni Help.

Instructions and self-service

Before contacting us, check whether the answer to your question can be easily found in the instructions available in the Studies Service. Student advice frequently receives questions about basic issues related to, for example, registering for the academic yearusing Sisu, and study rights

The HelsinkiUni Help AI-helper helps you find information in the instructions. In addition to the Studies Service, it searches for information on websites such as those of the University Library and the IT Helpdesk. You can find the AI-helper on HelsinkiUni Help’s front page.

There are also several things you can handle online yourself. Check out for example these:

Student advice without an appointment

If you cannot find the answer yourself, our student advice experts are here to help. Advice is available without an appointment both online and on campus.

Online, you can contact us through the HelsinkiUni Help digital service. In the digital service, you can:

  • chat with specialists every weekday from 9.00 to 15.00. During the Orientation week 24-28 August, the chat is open only from 9.00 to 12.00.
  • submit a service request. Service requests are answered on weekdays. You’ll receive the response by email.

The chat service provides general study-related advice. If your question concerns the content of your own degree programme, the best option is to submit a service request directly.

HelsinkiUni Help also has service points on campus. At the service points, you can receive general advice and collect certificates and other documents (such as certificates of student status, meal subsidy cards, academic year stickers, and similar documents).

Information on the locations and opening hours of the service points is available in the HelsinkiUni Help digital service.

Sisu advice

Sometimes Sisu-related issues are easier to sort out face to face than through messages. Face-to-face advice on using Sisu is available via Zoom every Thursday from 13 August to 19 December.

  • Sisu Zoom is open on Thursdays from 13.00 to 15.00. You can join at any time.
  • Join the Sisu Zoom session via this link.
  • If you are not admitted immediately, please wait patiently. Students are admitted one at a time in the order they arrive.

In Sisu Zoom, experts are always available to provide general Sisu advice for students from all faculties.

In the same Zoom session, you can also receive Sisu advice from experts in your home faculty on monthly changing themes:

Student advice by appointment

If your matter requires more detailed discussion, you can book an appointment with Student Advice. Appointments can be conducted by telephone, as a video meeting, or in person on campus.

When making the booking, please describe your matter as accurately as possible. This helps us prepare for the meeting.

After booking, you will receive a confirmation email containing detailed information about your appointment. If your plans change, please cancel your appointment well in advance. The cancellation link can be found in the confirmation message.

If your matter concerns exchange studies, please book an appointment with International Education Services instead of student advice.

Other support and advice services

The University also offers other support and advice services that can help with matters such as exchange studies, traineeships, career planning, study ability, and mental wellbeing.

You can reach also the specialists of these services through HelsinkiUni Help. Information about information sessions, workshops, and other guidance services is available on their own webpages:

Teacher providing guidance

Remember that the teacher providing guidance (called, for example, a PSP supervisor, teacher tutor or mentor in different faculties) is also an important source of support when you need help with study planning, setting goals, and making choices that support your goals.

If you do not know who your teacher providing guidance is, you can check this in Sisu under My Profile on the Groups tab. The name of your teacher providing guidance can be found under your supervision group.
