Registration for the academic year by basic degree students

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

Registering for the academic year means registering as an attending or non-attending student for the academic year in question. This registration is an annual obligation for all degree students. By registering annually from the first year of studies to graduation you will ensure that your studies can proceed without interruption.

Select the correct registration procedure

The instructions for registration vary slightly depending on your student status and the stage of your studies. Select the instructions appropriate to your situation:

Principles for registering for the academic year

  • Register for the academic year annually at your own initiative during the registration period.
  • If you have several study rights, register for each of them separately.
  • Register for each study right either as an attending or non-attending student, depending on whether you intend to study during the academic year or term or not.
  • Participating in studies and graduating is possible only as attending.
  • If you register for attendance, pay the Student Union membership fee with the registration. Remember also to pay the student healthcare fee to the Social Insurance Institution of Finland, Kela.
  • It is not possible to register or change the registration status for past terms.
  • If you forget to register during the set registration period, you may be charged a re-enrolment fee.

Registration period

The registration period is approximately the same time every year. The exact dates are separately announced for each academic year.

  • The registration period for the academic year 2025–2026 was from 1 April to 1 September 2025. The registration period for the academic year 2026-2027 starts 1 April 2026 and ends 31 August 2026. During the registration period, you can register in Oili.
  • Oili is open 1 November to 15 January too. During this period you can change your spring term non-attendance to attendance or attendance to non-attendance. Login to Oili requires an active user name.
  • You can change non-attendance to attendance during other periods of the academic year too. In that case, register outside Oili. However, note that you cannot change registration for past terms.
  • Attendance for the autumn term cannot be changed to non-attendance after the registration period for the academic year. Spring term attendance cannot be changed to non-attendance after 15 January.
  • Exceptional registration deadlines might apply if you have been granted an extension to your study right or when you re-enrol. You can find the deadline in the decision sent to you by your faculty.

Whether registering for attendance or non-attendance, you must observe the set registration periods. The registration period ends the last registration day at 23.59, when also registrations sent by a service request form or email need to arrive.

Did you forget to register in time? Read the instructions for late registration and re-enrolment fee.

Were you granted an extension to your right to study? Follow the registration instructions for students with an extension to their right to study.

When should you register for attendance?

  • Register as attending for all the study rights you intend to complete studies in during the academic year.
  • If you are about to graduate, register as attending for the term of graduation, even if you have completed all the studies required for your degree.
  • If you are currently transitioning from a bachelor’s programme to a master’s programme, but your request for a bachelor’s degree certificate has not yet been processed, register as attending for the bachelor’s studies. Your registration will automatically be transferred to apply to master’s studies once your bachelor’s degree has been registered.
  • You must register for attendance wherever you will be pursuing your studies: register as attending also while completing exchange studies abroad or studies in another Finnish higher education institution as cross-institutional studies.
  • If your study right has already expired, to be able to register as an attending student first apply to your faculty for an extension
  • If you are planning to resume your studies after a long break, read the checklist for returning students.

When should you register for non-attendance?

  • Register as non-attending for the study rights in which you do not intend to complete any studies during the academic year.
  • As non-attending, you cannot complete studies or graduate.
  • You can change non-attendance to attendance any time during the academic year (not for past terms though).
  • If your non-attendance is based on a statutory reason, submit a certificate verifying the reason of your non-attendance to HelsinkiUni Help when registering for the academic year. When the non-attendance i registered as non-attendance with a statutory reason, it does not consume validity of your study right.
  • Non-attendance that is not based on a statutory reason, may consume study time. Read more about target duration of degrees and the influence of non-attendance on the validity of your study right. If you don't register at all, your study time will be consumed as if you were attending.
  • First year students can only register as non-attending with a statutory reason. When you register for the first time to a new study right and need to defer the start of your studies, follow the registration instructions for new students. If you need to change the first year attendance to non-attendance for a statutory reason after accepting the study place and registering as attending, please contact HelsinkiUni Help for instructions.

How to register

Primarily students are expected to independently register for the academic year using the Oili registration service. The credentials of non-attending students will be automatically activated for the registration period to allow them to register through Oili.

Registration in Oili

  • Log into Oili using your university credentials.
  • If you register for attendance, pay the Student Union membership fee through Oili when registering.
  • If you register for attendance for the autumn term only, Oili will automatically register you for non-attendance for the spring term.
  • Oili is open for registration during the registration period only and 1 November to 15 January to enable changing the registration status for the spring term.
  • If registration in Oili is not possible, see instructions below.

Registration outside Oili

If Oili registration does not work for you, follow these instructions.

Examples of situation when you can register outside Oili
  • You wish to continue being non-attending, but your university credentials are not valid. In this situation you need to comply with the registration deadline.
  • You want to change non-attendance to attendance when Oili is closed.
  • You register after missing the deadline for registration.
  • You return to your studies after a longer break and you have been granted reinstatement of your study right by the faculty.
  • You have been granted an extension to your study right and your university credentials are not valid or Oili is not open.
  • You have deferred the start of your studies the first year for a statutory reason and are now starting your studies. In this situation you need to comply with the registration deadline.

Do not pay a re-enrolment fee if you have been granted a new extension to your study right and have not registered for it before or if you change an existing registration, for example you registered as attending only for the autumn term, but register now also for the spring term.

Pay a re-enrolment fee only if you forgot to register in time for the academic year when the study right was still valid, you forgot to register for an extended study right you already registered for last academic year or you apply for reinstatement of a study right. See instructions for returning to studies after a break.

If you are not sure if you can register outside the registration period without a re-enrolment fee, please ask HelsinkiUni Help for instructions.

How to register outside Oili
