Plenty of language and communication courses available in second teaching period

 

A wide range of both optional and compulsory courses will commence at the Language Centre in the second teaching period. You may continue with an intermediate course in a language you’ve studied previously or start learning a language from scratch. Explore the full range online and find the option that suits you best.

Register for our courses and exams through Sisu. Registration for courses in the second teaching period is now open and will conclude on 19 October 2025. 

Courses beginning in the second teaching period include:

Arabic

• Arabic for Beginners 2 (KK-ARA101, CEFR A1, 3 cr, contact teaching)

English

English courses beginning in the second teaching period include Academic and Professional Communication in English, offered as blended ALMS courses: 

• Academic and Professional Communication in English 1 & 2 (KK-ENKAIKKI, CEFR B2, 4 cr)
• Academic and Professional Communication in English 1 & 2 (KK-ENKAIKKI, CEFR B2, 4 cr)

 Also available are advanced courses in both remote and contact teaching formats:

• Advanced English: Advanced English: Legal Translation and Oral Argument (KK-ENG506, CEFR C1, 3 cr, remote teaching)
• Advanced English: Oral Fluency (KK-ENG406, CEFR B2, 2 cr, contact teaching)

NEW: A 10-credit pilot course in English will commence for students majoring in theology:

• Language and communication studies in the Bachelor’s Programme in Theology and Religious Studies (KK-ENTEOL, 10 cr, teaching periods III–IV, blended teaching). This course is for you if you major in theology and have not yet completed the language and communication studies required for your degree. In spring 2026 the Language Centre’s multilingual pilot course offers a way to complete the full 10-credit language and communication requirement for the bachelor’s degree in one go. Additional information can be found on the course page; you may also reach out to the course teachers, whose contact details are available on the course page. Please note that although the course starts in the third teaching period, you must register for it during the second period’s registration period, using (during the pilot stage) the code KK-ENTEOL. Make sure you choose the correct completion method.

Italian

• Italian for Beginners 2 (KK-ITA101, CEFR A1, 3 cr, blended teaching)

Korean

• Korean for Beginners 2 (KK-KOR101, CEFR A1, 2 cr, remote teaching)

Swedish

If you’re studying Swedish, you may build on previous studies or improve your speaking skills with courses such as these:

• Swedish for Beginners 2 (KK-RUO101, CEFR A1, 3 cr, blended teaching)
• Diskutera mera om kultur – Continue to Discuss Culture (KK-RUO405, CEFR B2, 1 cr, remote teaching)

Also offered in the second teaching period are a few courses in oral and written skills in the second national language, which are required for degrees. To complete the required studies during the autumn, take this opportunity and register for one of the following:

• Oral Skills in the Second National Language, Swedish (KK-RUBIYM, CEFR B1, 2 cr, group 2, blended teaching: Mondays remotely, Wednesdays in Viikki)
• Oral Skills in the Second National Language, Swedish (KK-RUERI, CEFR B1, 2 cr, group 2, blended teaching) NB! In addition to registering in Sisu, you must submit an ‘application’ in Moodle (link on course page).
• Oral Skills in the Second National Language, Swedish (KK-RUMAME, CEFR B1, 2 cr, group 4, blended teaching: Tuesdays in Viikki, Fridays remotely)

German

• German Course with Cultural Theme (KK-SAK203, CEFR A2, 2 cr, blended teaching)

First language (Finnish)

Academic interaction skills and academic writing skills: 

• Grammar and Textual Analysis (KK-AI006, CEFR C1–C2, 2 cr, remote teaching)
• From a Student to an Academic Professional (Finnish) (KK-AI010, CEFR C1–C2, 3 cr, blended teaching)
• Academic Writing (Finnish) for advanced writers (KK-AIAKTE2OP, 2 cr, online teaching)
  This course is for students with a grade E or L in the Finnish matriculation examination, or who are otherwise skilled and self-directed. 

Oral communication:

• Demanding Communication Situations (KK-AI003, 2 cr, blended teaching)

Estonian

• Estonian for Beginners 2 (KK-VIR101, CEFR A1, 2 cr, remote teaching)
