By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.
Search for degree programme
When you search for a degree programme by name or by part of the name the options in the list of degree programmes below the search field is narrowed down. After this you have to choose the degree programme from the list.
Your degree requirements include writing a personal study plan (PSP), a process that starts during the orientation week and continues throughout the degree programme to support your progress and the development of your expertise. You receive support and guidance from the teacher assigned to this role and from Student Services.
You must create your study plan in the Sisu system, accessible from the main menu on this page. In your study plan, you indicate the studies you intend to complete at different stages of your degree. It is not necessary to draft the plan all at once; instead you can update it as your studies progress. You will also use your study plan in Sisu to register for courses and submit electronic applications.
It is not necessary to create the entire study plan for the whole duration of your degree. It is enough that you add to the plan the studies you wish to register for. You can edit your study plan whenever you wish. You must apply for the approval of any changes you make only if you do not follow the predetermined structure of your degree (see ‘Selections and applications during studies’).
You can have several plans in Sisu, but only one of them can be your primary plan. You can register for courses only through the primary plan. The primary plan is also used, for example, to register decisions on the recognition or extension of studies. These decisions will not be transferred if you designate another study plan as your primary study plan, so select it carefully!
If you hold several rights to study, create a separate primary plan for each of them.
Sisu does not notify you if your studies have expired. Take the provisions on the expiry of studies into account when planning to incorporate previous studies into your degree.
Selections and applications during studies
Sisu monitors and guides the selections you make against the structure of your degree programme. In the situations below, you may also need some of the electronic services and applications available through Sisu to ensure that your plan meets your needs.
Selecting a study track: If students in your degree programme are to select their study track during their studies, your selection will be confirmed by Student Services in Sisu. Before this is done, you can create separate study plans for alternative study tracks to see what you would study in the different tracks.
Completing optional studies: The study plan has a separate section for optional studies, which may include detailed instructions for selecting studies. You can browse the optional studies offered by faculties on the Instructions website. Your study plan can incorporate not just modules, but also individual optional courses included in the section 'Other studies'. Detailed instructions with screenshots can be found in the instructions for study plans.
Completing studies at another higher education institution: Outline the stage of your degree where you would place a student exchange or studies completed under the Flexible Study Right Scheme (JOO). Further information on planning exchange studies can be found at Application process for exchange studies.
Deviating from the degree structure: Under the free edit mode in Sisu, you can propose the establishment of personal study paths for your degree, for example, that a study module required for your degree be substituted with another study module you have previously completed at the University of Helsinki. Adjustments made under the free edit mode must always be submitted for approval to Student Services. Read the instructions for using the free edit mode.
You need not usually have your study plan separately approved. However, your plan may include sections or modules indicated as requiring separate approval. This means that their content will be reviewed by Student Services before your graduation. Instructions for applying for module content approval
Recognising prior learning: If you have previously completed studies elsewhere, outline the stage of your degree where you wish to place them. First carefully read the general principles of recognition and then ask for advice on selecting the correct application type, if necessary. You can apply for the inclusion and substitution of prior learning through your study plan.
Changing degree requirements: As the curriculum period of your degree programme may change during your studies, the content of studies may also change. If that happens, it is recommended that you change a certain section of your study plan to the newer curriculum period or version to avoid needing to create a completely new plan. Instructions for changing the course or module version
If the duration of your right to study is about to expire before you graduate, you can apply in Sisu for an extension to your right to study. Instructions for applying for an extension
Education coordinators and student advisors at Student Services process applications in Sisu. If you have questions about applications and electronic services in Sisu, you can contact your faculty’s Student Services.
Sisu is a tool available to both you and the teacher assigned to provide you with guidance. Once you have been added to this teacher’s group, the teacher will have access to your study plan, and you can send each other questions and comments about the plan. Communication practices for the group are agreed separately in each degree programme. Please note that Student Services staff do not monitor comments, so you must contact them separately via email or other channels. Detailed information on guidance in Sisu can be found in the instructions for study plans.
PSP guidance and other support for study planning
The goal of PSP guidance is to support the progress of your studies and the development of your expertise and help you find the right methods of learning for you. PSP guidance is also a way for you to interact with teachers and other students and become acquainted with your discipline.
A teacher providing guidance or a group of teachers is designated at the beginning of your studies to coordinate your PSP guidance. This teacher may also go by another title (e.g., PSP supervisor, teacher tutor or mentor) in your degree programme. Degree programmes may offer guidance in different ways, including separately agreed meetings or as part of specific courses. For further information on practices in your degree programme, please see the section specific to your degree programme on this page.
PSP guidance allows you to reflect on the following issues with a teacher’s support:
What your study-related goals and needs are
How you intend to progress in your studies
What your skills and professional goals are, how you will develop your expertise
How different choices affect your goals
A carefully written study plan supports you in studying according to your goals, whether they relate to your target graduation date, the enhancement of expertise in a specific area or the balance between studies and other commitments.
Both you and the teacher assigned to provide you with guidance are responsible for the guidance process. You are responsible for completing studies, attending guidance meetings and responding to the teacher’s attempts to contact you. Apart from the teacher, you will also receive support for planning and completing studies from the University advice and guidance services:
General student advice staff help with issues including the technical use of Sisu, registration for the academic year, the right to study and student benefits. Faculty-specific student advice staff help with issues such as writing study plans and having previous learning recognised through credit transfer.

Teachers providing guidance (Teacher tutor)
You will meet the Teacher tutor assigned to you as soon as your studies begin on the orientation week. The group meeting will give you the chance to get to know the teacher, other students and the University community. Information on the teacher assigned to you can be found in Sisu. If necessary, the teacher can refer you to someone else who can answer your questions.
Moreover, you will receive guidance from other staff members if you have questions about their courses or responsibilities. The best way to contact teachers providing guidance and other staff is by email.
Joint sessions during the orientation week
,A welcome session is organised for new bachelor’s students, with all teaching staff introducing themselves. The session ends with the students being divided into groups headed by teacher tutors.
In a Sisu workshop held during orientation week, peer tutors, Student advisor and Education Coordinator advise students on the use of Sisu, focusing on drafting study plans and enrolling for courses and examinations.
Joint sessions and events during the 1. autumn term
During the first autumn of studies Teacher tutors meet all new students individually. They will also organize a joint meeting in the beginning of the second period. The Student Advisor and Education Coordinator hold another Sisu workshop to review the use of the system in more detail (incl. applications for credit transfer). The workshop includes also advice on student exchange and traineeships and career guidance.
Completing the Orientation Studies (FILK-001)
In the end of the autumn term your Teacher tutor will register you the credits of the Orientation Studies (FILK-001) when he/she has reviewed and approved your personal study plan (PSP)
Guidance during the 2nd and 3rd year of studies
Your Teacher tutor is your contact person at the University throughout your bachelor’s studies. You can contact him/her (from your helsinki.fi email address to their email) if you need personal guidance.
The Student Advisor and Education Coordinator advice on the degree structure and graduation and assist with problems in the use of Sisu and other student information systems. You can contact them by email: metsatalo-student@helsinki.fi
Proseminar and Bachelor´s Thesis Seminar
The instructors of bachelor’s thesis seminars supervise and assess bachelor’s theses. The instructors of bachelor’s thesis seminars meet each seminar participant in person at least once during or soon after the seminar. Although the primary purpose of this meeting is to supervise the bachelor’s thesis, general study-related guidance should be offered.
Master´s Programme in Philosophy
Teachers providing guidance (Teacher tutor)
The primary responsibility for the guidance of new students beginning in the master’s programme lies with professors. The new students joining the programme through the master’s admissions procedure will meet their Teacher tutor first During orientation week in a welcome session organised for new master’s students and at least once later in the autumn, either as a group or individually. A few times during the academic year, the tutors remind their group members that they can be contacted. Students transferring from the bachelor’s to the master’s programme can choose to continue with the teacher tutor assigned to them at the bachelor’s stage.
Guidance during seminars
Students must have already selected the preliminary topic of their master’s thesis. For assistance, they can contact professors, university lecturers and master’s thesis seminar instructors. For a list of the master’s thesis topics of staff, see the Moodle page ‘Filosofia-info’ (section ‘Opiskelu ja tutkielmat’): https://moodle.helsinki.fi/course/view.php?id=36016.
Students are assigned to a primary supervisor and, in some cases, a second supervisor for their master’s thesis.
At the beginning of a supervisory relationship, the student and the primary supervisor must discuss, from the perspective of each party, their objectives and expectations as well as roles and responsibilities.
It is recommended that, after the above discussion, the student and supervisor conclude a supervision agreement defining the topic of the thesis in sufficient detail.
If a student later wishes to change the topic, this must be agreed with their primary supervisor.
In the Bachelor’s Programme in History, you are offered personal supervision at least twice during your bachelor’s studies. As part of this supervision, you will draw up a personal study plan (PSP) in Sisu.
You will draw up the first study plan at the very beginning of your studies as part of orientation studies. The focus is on planning the studies you will complete during your first academic year. You will receive instructions during orientation week. The instructions are also available on the Moodle platform, for which you will automatically receive access rights. The PSP supervision provided at the beginning of your studies consists of a few group meetings and a one-on-one discussion with your PSP supervisor. You will find out who your PSP supervisor is at the beginning of orientation studies. You can contact your supervisor if you have questions about completing studies in history. Your PSP supervisor will remain the same until you participate in the practicum.
You will again receive personal supervision in connection with the intermediate-level course HISK-241 Practicum, at which time you will discuss your studies with your PSP supervisor and update your study plan. Your PSP supervisor may change at this point. Your PSP supervisor during intermediate studies is your practicum instructor. They will continue as your PSP supervisor until the end of your bachelor’s studies. At the intermediate stage, you will plan your studies in both the short and the long term: you will plan the studies you will complete during the academic year, but will also plan how to complete the bachelor’s degree as a whole.
ISP-instruktioner i din studieinriktning

Student guidance and supervision in Bachelor's Programme in Politics, Media and Communication
During the first year
Goals:
Introduce students to the degree programme and university studies
Write personal study plans enabling all students to get their studies off to a good start
Provide guidance, during the spring of the first year, focused on defining students’ study tracks
Responsibilities:
The programme appoints teacher tutors to guide groups of new students during their first year of study.
Peer tutors are responsible for guidance on various practical matters and introduce students to study planning.
The bachelor’s programme is responsible for instructions for defining students’ study tracks.
Teaching and research staff offer guidance and supervision on teaching and research requiring consideration of the content of studies and disciplines.
Teaching and Learning Services staff advise students on the degree structure and graduation, and are responsible for information, advice and special counselling in their areas of expertise, such as advice on student exchange and traineeships, career counselling, and the consultation and guidance offered by the University’s counselling psychologists. In addition, Student Services staff assist students with problems in the use of Sisu and other student information systems.
The programme steering group monitors student progress actively, using various information sources (e.g., Oodikone, HowULearn surveys, status reports and student consultations).
Practical guidance
Teacher tutors meet new students during orientation week and at least once later in the autumn, either as a group or individually. A few times during the academic year, the tutors remind their group members that they can be contacted.
Teacher tutors ensure that all students write a personal study plan (PSP).
An education coordinator creates guidance groups manually in Sisu based on tutor groups.
Peer tutors guide first-year students actively, especially at the beginning of studies.
In February, the programme director and an education coordinator organise an information session on defining students’ study tracks.
Teacher tutors can decide fairly independently on the guidance methods used.
From the second year of study:
Goals:
Introduce students to their study track
Monitor and support student progress
Responsibilities:
Discipline staff are responsible for discipline-specific orientation.
In each discipline, student progress is supported by assigning students to teachers providing guidance.
Teaching and research staff offer guidance and supervision on teaching and research requiring consideration of the content of studies and disciplines.
Teaching and Learning Services staff advise students on the degree structure and graduation and are responsible for information, advice and special guidance in their areas of expertise, such as advice on student exchange and traineeships, career guidance, and the consultation and guidance offered by the University’s counselling psychologists. In addition, Student Services staff assist students with problems in the use of Sisu and other student information systems.
The programme steering group monitors student progress actively, using various information sources (e.g., Oodikone, HowULearn surveys, status reports and student consultations).
Practical guidance
Discipline-specific sessions are organised at the beginning of the second year of study to offer a chance for the discipline staff and students selected for the relevant study track to meet each other.
An education coordinator creates track-specific guidance groups in Sisu. These automatically updated groups are based on the students’ right to study:
Students of the Study Track in Politics and Organisations
Students of the Study Track in World Politics
Students of the Study Track in Media and Communication
Each guidance group is assigned to a group of teachers responsible for guidance, consisting of several teachers in the relevant study track. These teachers are chosen within the disciplines. The teachers agree with each other on the division of duties by assigning students among themselves.
Teachers providing guidance inform student groups of the teachers’ guidance responsibilities.
Teachers keep in contact with their groups, organise group meetings and encourage students to contact them if they have any questions or concerns.
Students whose study track has not been defined form a separate guidance group, with guidance arrangements made separately based on the group size.
Guidance during the bachelor’s seminar
Goals:
Supervise bachelor’s theses and support graduation
Guide students to ensure the completion of bachelor’s degrees in the target duration
Responsibilities:
The bachelor’s seminar instructor supervises bachelor’s theses.
If necessary, the instructor guides general study planning as well.
Students can continue to contact the teachers responsible for their guidance.
Practical guidance
The bachelor’s seminar instructor meets each seminar participant personally at least once during the seminar. Although the purpose is to supervise the bachelor’s thesis, general study-related guidance can be offered.
Teachers providing guidance remind students via email of the guidance available.
PSP Instructions in Your Degree Programme
The University of Helsinki has a variety of services for the provision of guidance; for information on which service best meets your needs, please see the guidance compass. At the beginning of their studies, each student in the Bachelor’s Programme in Social Research is assigned a teacher providing guidance. In addition, students receive guidance at joint programme sessions and, later, in study track–specific sessions.
1. Teachers providing guidance
You will meet the teacher assigned to you as soon as your studies begin. Group meetings will give you the chance to get to know the teacher, other students and the University community. This teacher is your contact person at the University throughout your bachelor’s studies. You can contact them (from your helsinki.fi email address to their email) if you need personal guidance. Information on the teacher assigned to you can be found in Sisu. If necessary, the teacher can refer you to someone else who can answer your questions.
Moreover, you will receive guidance from other staff members as part of regular academic interaction if you have questions about their courses or responsibilities. The best way to contact teachers providing guidance and other staff is by email.
2. Joint sessions during the first autumn term
During the first autumn of studies, the Bachelor’s Programme in Social Research organises information sessions on study-related matters as part of the SOSK-000 HowULearn 0 course. Although the compulsory course component is the HowULearn survey, you should attend the information sessions too, as they provide important information about the University.
3. Guidance sessions in the study track
During the spring term of the second year of study, the focus turns to study track–specific courses, and individual tracks may organise their own guidance sessions. You will be invited to such sessions by email.

PSP
You will be invited to personal guidance meetings at least twice during your studies in the Bachelor’s Programme in Society and Change. As part of this guidance, you will draw up a personal study plan (PSP) in Sisu.
You will draft your first PSP as soon as your studies begin. At this point, you will plan your studies for the first academic year according to instructions provided during orientation week. PSP guidance during the first autumn term consists of a few group meetings and a one-on-one discussion with your PSP teacher, or teacher tutor, in October. This discussion is compulsory for all students as part of the course YK-113 Practicum of Society and Change; the teacher tutor must confirm that you have had the discussion. You will find out who your PSP teacher is at the beginning of orientation studies. You can contact them if you have questions about completing studies in the programme. At this stage, it is particularly important to find out whether any previous learning or studies can be recognised.
Your PSP teacher will remain the same until your study track has been defined. At the beginning of the autumn term, group meetings are organised in all disciplines for new students in each study track. Subsequently, the teacher tutor for your track will remain your PSP teacher until the end of your bachelor’s studies. You can find their name in Sisu under Groups. You can contact your teacher tutor during their weekly office hours if you need answers from them requiring knowledge or consideration of the content of studies and disciplines.
You will be invited to a second personal guidance discussion during the bachelor’s seminar. Your study plan will be updated and reviewed to establish how you will complete your bachelor’s degree and proceed afterwards.

Academic mentoring in ParAs
In the beginning of your studies in ParAs programme you will be asked to mark your main scientific interests via an electronic form. Based on the form, you will be appointed an Academic Mentor (Personal study plan supervisor). Once the mentorship has been established, you will be added to the corresponding study guidance group in Sisu. You will receive the contact information of the mentor in an email sent by the Education coordinator.
Guidance during different stages of your studies
Guidance is given by direct discussions between the student and the Academic Mentor in the very beginning of the supervision period. Later on, whenever you are in need of academic guidance, you can contact your mentor and ask for a meeting. The format and time of the meeting will be decided between you and the supervisor.
In the very beginning, the focus is on the study plan.
During the second term, the focus moves to finding a suitable Master’s thesis topic and supervisor, and the possibility of studies abroad.
You are strongly encouraged to request guidance whenever you need it. Your mentor may contact you if they notice that you are falling severely behind your study plan.
You are encouraged to register on the Moodle page of the programme.

If for a personal reason, a student needs to complete studies in an order that deviates from academic year and class-specific plans, this must always be agreed with the supervising teachers of the departments coordinating the studies. In this case, the student must update his or her personal study plan (PSP). These special arrangements must also be agreed with the teachers of the courses.
It is the student’s responsibility to identify missing studies and plan the order of completion with the help of the course catalogue and transcript of studies and to submit a proposal for an updated PSP. Supervising teachers will provide advice on how to update the PSP. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the approved PSP and, when needed, to ensure that it is updated at least once a year.
All new students starting their studies in the Master's Programme in European and Nordic Studies are assigned a supervising teacher of their own study track.
Supervising teachers in 2024–2025:
Social Sciences Study Track: Hanna Tuominen and Johanna Kantola
Humanities Study Track: Peter Stadius
Supervision for first-year students
The program director and supervising teachers meet regularly new students during their joint studies courses in the first and second period of the first study year. This close contact is used also to supervise students.
New students get information on the program studies and research in first information session in autumn and during the first compulsory course unit.
Each cohort of each study track convenes individually or as a group (or smaller groups) during the first period of the first study year in a meeting hosted by the teacher tutor. After that all students can appoint a personal supervision time if needed. Students are encouraged to contact teacher tutors or the program director in case study-related issues arise.
A supervising teacher discusses with students on their expectations, needs and answers questions.
Supervision for second-year students
A supervising teacher meets the supervised students in the master’s thesis seminar sessions as a group and individually when needed.
If needed, the supervising teacher organises a group meeting with the supervised students or students are provided with the opportunity for individual meetings.
students who do not start the thesis seminar are encouraged to contact the programme director and other teachers when needed
additionally, a possibility for an extra supervision group for those who have not completed their thesis on time
Responsibilities of supervised students
E.g., updating their study plan
participating in supervision and guidance meetings
informing supervising teachers on potential lengthy breaks (one semester) in their studies.
PSP Instructions in Your Degree Programme
The personal study plan (PSP) is made via Sisu during the course Principles in genetics and molecular biosciences (GMB-001, 14 cr/ GMB-099, 10 cr) and in the study plan meetings in the beginning of the studies under guidance of the supervising PSP teachers of the programme.
PSP
Supervising PSP teachers will help you with your personal study plan.
A tutoring group is formed in Sisu for each student and his/her supervising PSP teacher. You will find your supervising teacher when you are registered in Sisu, on page: My Profile => Groups. This data is available by the end of the first autumn term. After that you can receive feedback on your PSP and answers to your questions through Sisu from your supervising PSP teacher.
Instructions for updating your PSP you can find in these sections of this page:
Approving the study plan for students studying according to 2023-2026 degree structure (plans including exceptions from the degree structure): Degree Programme Director Tom Jilbert, tom.jilbert@helsinki.fi.
Counselling on the study tracks (incl approving the study plan for students studying according to 2020-2023 degree structure) until July 31st 2027:
Answers to questions related to guidance in practice
How is the academic mentor determined and where can students find information on their mentor? 2023-2026 curriculum: Students propose two mentor candidates from the programme board using the first assignment in the Moodle page. The board selects the most suitable mentor from the proposals, ensuring an even distribution of students for each mentor. Pre-2023 curriculum: Students select a study track via an e-form and the study track coordinator is their academic mentor.
Is guidance included in certain courses or given within a certain timeframe (the instructions may describe the model, for example, as a graph)? In Conducting Scientific Research course students establish connections with thesis supervisors and general guidance on the thesis is provided.
What are the focus areas of guidance at different stages of studies? According to the faculty guidelines, see the guidance model table.
Is guidance given mostly to individuals or to groups? Both. Group guidance is given in the common Moodle page and in Conducting Scientific Research course, and individual guidance is given to students by their thesis supervisor and academic mentor.
How do communications work: Do students request guidance, or is it the duty of mentors to contact students? Most information about the studies can be found in the Moodle page. 2023-2026 curriculum: Students have obligatory meetings with their academic mentor and thesis supervisor in the first year of their studies. Pre-2023 curriculum: Students can arrange guidance by contacting their academic mentor.
What tools are used to support guidance (e.g., Sisu, Moodle, ePortfolio)? Moodle page, Zoom and Sisu are used.
Are study plans reviewed at specific ‘checkpoints’ (e.g., during the first year, or if studies do not progress within the target schedule)? 2023-2026 curriculum: Students present their study plans to their academic mentor in the first half of year one of their studies and the study plan is reviewed with their thesis supervisor at the end of year one. Pre-2023 curriculum: Study plans reviewed prior to graduation or in cases of unusually slow study progress.
PSP Instructions in Your Degree Programme
GPC offers guidance to incoming students and second year students, as well all students receive supervision for their MA theses throughout their second year of studies.
You can find your group's supervising teacher in Sisu: My profile --> Groups.
Supervision for first-year students
Entering students are assigned a teacher tutor, and students meet this track-specific instructor during the first week of their studies. The teacher tutor holds a meeting for the cohort of students and is available to students during office hours or by appointment for additional guidance during the first year. The teacher tutor can help students organise their study plans, and help students find resources and identify strategies to achieve their aims while in the GPC Programme. The teacher tutors provide guidance on students’ Personal Study Plan (PSP) during the first semester and report any challenges that arise to the programme director.
Incoming students are also offered peer support by student tutors. The student tutors are introduced during the orientation week before studies begin.
Supervision for second-year students
Second year students are able to consult with their MA supervisors for guidance toward completing the GPC MA degree. In the case that they decline to sign up for MA supervision, students should seek curricula guidance from their first-year teacher tutor.
For those students still completing their coursework or MA theses after the second year of study, GPC attempts to organise occasional optional hybrid workshops to facilitate programme completion. As well these students are welcome to check in with their MA supervisors regarding guidance needs that they have. For any challenges outside of the scope of MA supervision, students should contact the Programme Director who will help to identify appropriate sources of support.
PSP Instructions in Your Degree Programme
In the Master’s Programme in History, you are offered personal supervision in connection with the seminar. As part of this supervision, you will draw up a personal study plan (PSP) in Sisu. Student Guidance and Supervision in the Faculty of Medicine
The degree programme steering groups are responsible for the system of student guidance as well as its smooth functioning. The degree programme steering groups are responsible for ensuring that each student will be assigned a teacher providing guidance or a mentor who is responsible for guidance related to the student’s personal study plan, thus supporting the student particularly in professional growth. If a group of teachers is responsible for the guidance, their duties will be defined by the degree programme steering group and communicated to the students. Related responsibilities must be included in the work plans of teaching and research staff in a clear and concrete way. In the case of education that leads to a profession, guidance related to professional growth and relevant support will be provided on clinical courses as well as before and during traineeships. In addition, all degree programmes of the Faculty will provide students with guidance and supervision in completing their advanced theses, thereby supporting students’ professional growth.
Degree programmes have different goals and practices for guidance and supervision. Guidance, supervision and advice can be provided under the direction of the teacher providing guidance, in groups, seminars, student peer groups organised by the teacher providing guidance or supervisor, or as individual appointments between the teacher providing guidance or the supervisor and the student, if separately agreed.
The degree programmes hold several meetings during studies (e.g., tutoring, mentoring, guidance, info sessions on traineeships, progress in studies and personal study plans).
The steering groups of degree programmes annually discuss the monitoring data concerning the progress of students and decide on measures to support students whether they are behind, keeping pace with or ahead of schedule (Rector’s Decision HY/801/00.00.06.00/2017, 24 October 2017).
At the Faculty of Medicine, guidance models are drawn up on a degree programme–specific basis, and decisions on such models are made by the degree programme steering groups.
Study guidance and PSP instructions in your degree programme
General study guidance in geography master’s programme is organized in parallel sessions with the course GEOG-388 Master thesis seminar in geography. There is an examination day once a month on Fridays and on those days, there will be study guidance sessions available for different target groups of master`s students. It is recommended that every student participates in the recommended guidance sessions once every half a year, but students can also join more often if they so wish.
Guidance sessions are structured so that they start with general information about the topic of the day presented by a teacher or other specialist. After the common start, students are divided to smaller groups to discuss the topic with their peers and 1–2 members of staff. Staff members and groups will be different in every session, so the student can choose the group that best matches their interests and needs at the time.
1. year
The focus of guidance is on the first autumn how to start and plan studies and get to know geography staff. This includes both practical planning of what courses to enroll in Sisu as well as more general scoping of interests and future plans. On the first spring we check together that everyone has found their study path and help to make those plans succeed. In this guidance session there will also be general guidelines and support for starting the thesis project and finding a supervision.
2. year
On the second autumn the guidance session focuses on looking forward to graduation: how has the thesis process started and what skills and studies would be useful in the chosen career path of the student. On the second spring the guidance session goes over the technicalities of graduating as well as providing teacher and peer support not linked thesis supervision.
The study plan of the Agricultural, environmental and resource economics study program is made in the study course AGERE-001 Introduction to the Master program in Agricultural, environmental and resource economics. In making the study plan, the supervising teacher and the educational planner of the degree program assist. AGERE-001 is organized twice in the Academic year at the beginning of the 1st and 3rd periods.
The study plan is made in the SISU with the help of instructions and supervising teachers. When creating the study plan, you can also use pdf curricula, which show e.g. the entirety of the curriculum of the degree program and the recommended completion times of the study courses as well as the teaching periods.

Student guidance and supervision in Master's Programme in Politics, Media and Communication
Goals:
Introduce students to their study track
Monitor and support student progress
Write personal study plans (PSP), enabling all students to get their master’s studies off to a good start
Responsibilities:
Discipline staff are responsible for discipline-specific orientation.
In each discipline, new students are assigned to teachers responsible for their guidance so as to support student progress.
Teaching and research staff offer guidance and supervision relevant to teaching and research and requiring consideration of the content of studies and disciplines.
1. New students: Students admitted through the joint application procedure that year and graduates from programmes other than the Bachelor’s Programme in Politics, Media and Communication who have been offered the option to study in the master’s programme
At the beginning of the academic year, new students admitted to the study track are introduced to the disciplines and the structure of studies in the master’s programme.
An education coordinator creates track-specific guidance groups in Sisu. These automatically updated groups are based on the students’ right to study:
Students of the Study Track in Politics and Organisations
Students of the Study Track in World Politics
Students of the Study Track in Media and Communication
Each guidance group is assigned to a teacher providing guidance. These teachers are chosen within the disciplines.
Teachers providing guidance inform student groups of the teachers’ guidance responsibilities.
Teachers review study plans (PSP) and their feasibility with students.
Teachers keep in contact with their groups, organise group meetings and encourage students to contact them if they have any questions or concerns.
2. Other than new students, including graduates from the Bachelor’s Programme in Politics, Media and Communication
At the beginning of the term, a session is organised to introduce the structure of studies in the master’s programme to students who transferred to the relevant study track during the previous academic year. The autumn term meeting is also intended for new students admitted through the joint application procedure.
An education coordinator creates track-specific guidance groups in Sisu. Updated each term, these groups are based on the students’ right to study:
Students of the Study Track in Politics and Organisations
Students of the Study Track in World Politics
Students of the Study Track in Media and Communication
Each guidance group is assigned to a group of teachers responsible for guidance consisting of several teachers in the relevant study track. These teachers are chosen within the disciplines. The teachers agree with each other on the division of duties by assigning students among themselves.
Teachers providing guidance inform student groups of the teachers’ guidance responsibilities.
Teachers review study plans (PSP) and their feasibility with students.
Teachers keep in contact with their groups, organise group meetings and encourage students to contact them if they have any questions or concerns.
Guidance during the master’s thesis seminar
Goals:
Supervise master’s theses and support graduation
Guide students to ensure the completion of master’s degrees in the target duration
Responsibilities:
Thesis seminar instructors supervise master’s theses (unless a student and a seminar instructor agree otherwise).
If necessary, the instructors guide general study planning as well.
Students can continue to contact the teachers providing guidance.
Practical guidance
The instructors of master’s thesis seminars meet each seminar participant either at group meetings or in person during the seminar. Although the primary purpose of this meeting is to supervise the master’s thesis, general study-related guidance should be offered.
Teachers providing guidance remind students via email of the guidance available.

PSP Instructions in Your Degree Programme
You will receive guidance in the Master’s Programme in Social Research both in groups and individually. At the beginning of studies, all study tracks offered in the programme (criminology, consumption in society, social psychology, social work, sociology, social and public policy, and demography) organise their own group meeting(s) for new students. The teachers providing guidance contact all new students admitted through the master’s admissions procedure by email before studies begin or during the first teaching period, inviting them to the group meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to provide general information about the track and its studies and enable informal discussion. Another aim is to inform students about any guidance material (e.g., Moodle sites) provided by their track for student use.
Instructions for study planning are reviewed at sessions organised during orientation week for students joining the programme through the master’s admissions procedure. You will be informed of the person assigned to you as the teacher providing guidance at the orientation week session organised by the Master’s Programme in Social Research. You can also find the teacher’s name on the Instructions for Students website and in Sisu. Students moving from a study track in the bachelor’s programme to the master’s programme are usually assigned a new teacher providing guidance.
In addition to group meetings, the teachers providing guidance offer appointments for personal remote or on-site guidance to review your personal study plan (PSP) in Sisu. At the group meetings, you will be notified about the arrangements required for personal meetings and how often they can be organised (at least once per academic year for two academic years). The aim is that you belong to the guidance group of the teacher assigned at the beginning of your studies to provide guidance throughout your master’s studies.
Moreover, you will receive guidance from other staff members as part of regular academic interaction in questions relevant to their courses or responsibilities. If necessary, the teacher providing guidance can refer you to the correct person to answer your questions. You can contact the teachers and other staff by email.
The roles of the teacher providing guidance and the master’s thesis supervisor are separate. You will be assigned a master’s thesis supervisor no later than during Master’s Thesis Seminar I. The supervisor supports your thesis work and the completion of your thesis. You can also talk about other study-related matters with your supervisor.
In the Master's Programme in Theology and Religious Studies PSP work has been integrated into seminar work and studies on working life skills.
How to plan your studies in Master's Programme in Theoretical and Computational Methods
Draw up your study plan in Sisu, when starting your Master's studies. See example study paths and schedules in Master's Programme in Theoretical and Computational Methods. You can ask help from the persons responsible for study guidance (listed below) or the education coordinator by email.
After you have made the first version of your study plan, you will be added to the guidance group of the PSP supervisor of your own specialization. Information about the academic mentor will be sent to you via email. You will be automatically added to the group of the academic mentor in Sisu and together with your mentor you will finalize the study plan in the beginning of your studies. You can request follow-up meetings with your academic mentor, and we recommend to have at least one follow-up meeting every year.

Personal Study Plan in your degree programme
The programme has three study tracks: mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. The contact persons for study tracks can be found from the programme webpage under each study track.
When creating your personal study plan, you may benefit from model study plans:
How is the academic mentor determined and where can I find information on my mentor?
The education coordinator contacts you at the beginning of your studies. You should then decide on a preliminary study track (that can be changed later). Based on the chosen study track, an academic mentor is assigned to you, and you are added to the academic mentor’s group in Sisu. The academic mentor is added to the conversation, giving both you and the academic mentor each other's contacts and some instructions. Later, if you want to know who your academic mentor is, you can check in Sisu (My profile - Groups), or ask the education coordinator at uni-help (at) helsinki.fi. You can also switch from one academic mentor to another by request, for instance, if you wish to switch to another study track.
Is guidance included in certain courses or in a certain time frame?
Students are expected to participate in Master’s studies seminar I at the beginning of their studies as an introductory course to the practicalities of the programme. Later on in their studies, the student receives guidance regarding thesis work in Master’s studies seminar II.
What are the focus areas of guidance at different stages of studies?
When first starting in the programme, you are guided towards finding your own study track and understanding the structure of studies. When you have found the study track that interests you the most, guidance is given to find and complete studies relevant for that track and for your future. Once enough studies have been completed to start writing the thesis, the guidance focus shifts towards thesis work. The academic mentor need not be the thesis instructor.
Is guidance given mostly to individuals or to groups?
In Master’s studies seminars, guidance is given to a group. Otherwise, guidance is often individual between the student and either their academic mentor or the education coordinator of the programme.
How do communications work? Do students request guidance, or is it the duty of mentors to contact students?
Once a student is first assigned an academic mentor, it is recommended for them to agree on a meeting time to discuss and plan the first 60 credits of studies. The academic mentor is assumed to take an active role in initiating the first meeting. Students are also encouraged to contact their academic mentor. After the initial meeting, students should contact their academic mentor or education coordinator whenever they need more guidance.
What tools are used to support guidance?
Students should contact their academic mentors by email, or by meeting them in their office. Sisu is used to check and edit the student’s study plan. Personal Study Plan Instructions in Your Degree Programme
Study tracks
The Master’s Programme in Life Science Informatics has four study tracks:
Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine
Biomathematics
Biostatistics
Exological informatics
Teacher tutor
The education coordinator or program director contacts the student at the beginning of their studies. The student is asked to decide on a preliminary study track. Based on the chosen study track, an academic mentor is assigned to the student, and the student is added to the academic mentor’s group in Sisu.
At the beginning of their studies every student will be appointed with a teacher tutor who will help you with your study plan. Later in your studies the teacher tutor helps you also in finding a suitable master's thesis topic and thesis supervisor. Teacher tutor will be also your personal tutor for issues related to studies and progress in the program in general.
We want to appoint you with the best possible tutor for which reason it is advisable to first familiarize yourself with our study tracks. When you begin your studies we will ask your preferences concerning the study track an, if you know already which study-tracks you are most interested in, we will appoint you with the study track specific tutor. However, it is also perfectly fine if you don't know your preference yet. All tutors can help you in the beginning of your studies and during the first fall you will take introductory course from all of our four tracks which then helps you to choose your specialization area.
Student is responsible in finding a MSc topic and supervisor. The academic mentor and the teacher of the Research Seminar in Life Science Informatics can help in that. Once MSc thesis topic and supervisor are found, student needs to write a thesis plan and consult the study track leader to get approval for the plan. After that, a student fills in an e-form detailing the thesis plan. The form is reviewed and checked by education coordinator or program director.
Students should contact their academic mentors by email, or by meeting them in their office. Sisu is used to check and edit the student’s study plan. Moodle is used during courses to deliver guidance materials. The programme’s webpages and Instructions for students are used as other sources of information. They also contain model timetables that can be used for planning the studies so that they can be finalized in target time.

Supervision and Guidance in the COS programme
All new students starting their studies in the COS programme are assigned a track-specific teacher tutor whom they meet during the Orientation week. Ideally, the teacher tutor stays the same for the duration of the students’ degree.
Teacher tutors in 2025-2026:
Development Studies: Franklin Obeng-Odoom
Social and Cultural Anthropology: Marianna Keisalo
Social Data Science: Matti Nelimarkka
Social and Public Policy: Minna van Gerven
Social Psychology: Inari Sakki
Sociology: David Inglis
During the first year of studies the goal of the supervision and guidance in the COS programme is to support students in drawing up a Personal Study Plan (PSP) for the duration of their degree as well as introduce potential study track -specific research topics to them. During the second year the focus is more on thesis supervision and on potential traineeship opportunities.
Supervision for new students / first-year students
Each cohort of each study track convenes as a group in the beginning of the first study year in a meeting hosted by a teacher tutor. All students are then invited to a personal supervision meeting with the teacher tutor by the second period of the first study year. After that, personal supervision meetings are organized based on the students' needs. Students are encouraged to contact teacher tutors or the programme director in case study-related issues arise.
The purpose of the meetings is to help the new students with drafting of a Personal Study Plan in Sisu and orienting towards thesis work. Personal Study Plan is drawn up and discussed with the teacher tutor during the time frame of the first teaching period. You can update your study plan and change it whenever you wish. If you need help with it regarding the contents of the plan or potential thesis topics you can contact your teacher tutor. In technical problems or questions regarding the structure of the degree, please contact the Kruununhaka Student Services.
The supervision practices of the different study tracks vary; for some study tracks (Social Data Science, Social Psychology) the track-specific compulsory course focuses on group formation and peer support, whereas in other study tracks student inclusivity and peer support are promoted in the course of the first thesis seminar. The compulsory course COS seminar (COS-301) taught in the first teaching period aims to help create identity for the programme and create cohesion and team spirit within the COS cohort.
Supervision for second-year students
A teacher tutor organises a group meeting with the supervised second- year student and/or students are provided with the opportunity for a one-on-one meeting based on students’ needs.
During the second year the focus is on thesis supervision.
Thesis supervision
Students are introduced to the current research conducted in the different disciplines of the study tracks during the first compulsory course COS seminar. Furthermore, the research topics of each study track are included in the following track-specific courses:
Central Themes in Social and Cultural Anthropology (Period 1 or 2)
Key Concepts in Social Data Science (Period 1 first year)
Social and Public Policy courses: Wellbeing and Health (period 4) & Social Policy Concepts (period 1)
Key Concepts in Sociology (Period 2 each year)
Topical Issues in Social Psychology (Period 1 every year)
Theories of Development (Period 4)
The students are usually appointed a thesis supervisor in the first Master’s Thesis seminar, The current practices vary between the study tracks of the programme, for detailed information, please see the instructions of the disciplines (pdf).
Responsibilities and division of duties
Students are responsible for creating and updating the study plan in Sisu, participating in supervision and guidance meetings as well as informing teacher tutors on potential lengthy breaks in their studies.
The teacher tutor plays an active role in supervising the Personal Study Plan (PSP) process during the first term and report any problems in it to the programme director. The student progress in the programme is further discussed by the steering group at least once a year.
In addition, the steering group discusses students’ feedback provided by the student members in every steering group meeting, and it is also taken into consideration when planning the programme and its contents.
PSP Instructions in Your Degree Programme
PSP work starts in the orientation week of your first year. The ICE programme organizes a programme info meeting during the orientation week, which will introduce you the programme and its people and help you to draft your study plan. To be able to register for courses you need to draft a study plan in Sisu. It is very important that all new students participate in the info meeting.
Throughout your studies your assigned PSP teacher is available to guide you with the progress of your studies. During the first academic term you will meet your PSP teacher in person. In the meeting you can talk about, for example, your study plan, career plans, learning challenges, academic life in general, and so on. You can find out your PSP teacher in Sisu: Open “My profile” in the main menu of Sisu. Click on the “Groups” tab. The tab lists all the groups that you are included in, detailing the group name, type (tutoring group) and coordinator (your PSP supervisor).
In academic year 2023-2024 the PSP teachers are
Alexandra Bergholm
Julie Yu-Wen Chen
Saila Poutiainen
During your first autumn term the ICE programme organizes one or two group PSP meetings. The topics of the meetings may vary from year to year, but usually they will include topics such as traineeships and work-life, academic freedom, implicit norms of communication and expectations in the Finnish academia (or UH), and the thesis process.
During the yearly orientation week ICE programme organizes an info meeting also for returning students (the 2nd year and older students) on teaching and other topical study issues. During the 2nd year supervising concentrates on completing your thesis. The Seminar meetings are an essential part of this. Please note that you will choose your individual thesis supervisor according to your thesis topic and it is usually not the same person as your PSP teacher.
ICE programme organizes throughout the year other info meetings and informal gatherings for all ICE students and teachers on a variety of topics.

Guidance in the Master’s Programme in Social and Health Research and Management
In the Master’s Programme in Social and Health Research and Management, you receive both individual and group guidance. As part of this guidance, you draw up a personal study plan (PSP) in Sisu.
Instructions for study planning are offered during orientation week. At a welcome session organised by the master’s programme during orientation week, the principles of studying are explained, and students are split into guidance groups. During the first year of study, guidance is mainly given in group format. Guidance groups meet from the beginning of studies.
Personal study plans (PSP) are written at the beginning of studies, that is, during the first teaching period of the first year of study. Teachers providing guidance (PSP teachers) comment on the plans in Sisu. PSPs are not included in a specific course. Detailed instructions for writing PSPs are provided in group guidance sessions.
Students can ask their PSP teachers for personal guidance once per academic year for two academic years. They can do so by sending an email to the teacher. The guidance can be provided either remotely or face to face. Teachers providing guidance monitor student progress prior to guidance meetings.
Your PSP teacher remains the same throughout your studies. If a PSP teacher changes during a student’s studies, the change is recorded in Sisu, and the student is notified via email.
The responsibility for master’s thesis supervision lies with the master’s seminar instructors and the supervisor(s) of each thesis. The supervisor(s) are appointed during the master’s seminar.
The persons and parties responsible for various areas of student guidance are listed in the table below. For additional information on the division of general student advice duties, see the Instructions for Student website: Guidance compass.

Practical implementation of guidance and PSP in USP
In the Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning (USP), academic mentors are selected according to the faculty of the student's degree (a student can check their tutoring teacher from Sisu):
Faculty of Arts: Associate professor Florencia Quesada Avendaño
Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences: University lecturer Johan Kotze
Faculty of Science: University lecturer Petteri Muukkonen
Faculty of Social Sciences: University lecturer Jani Vuolteenaho
Students are informed whom their academic mentor is during the orientation week, in the USP’s Student Guidebook, and in the Instructions for Students.
Guidance is mainly provided to groups or to all students at once. Students can request personal meetings with their academic mentor. It is the student’s duty to contact their academic mentor for a personal meeting. The study programme organizes four common mentoring events per year for first year students (twice in the autumn, mid-September and early-December; and twice in the spring, Mid-February and in May). These common mentoring events consist of a common part and small group meetings. For second year and older students, two meetings are organized, one in the autumn (September), and one in spring (February).
The Sisu platform and a Moodle page are used to support guidance. During the first spring, students do their Personal Study Plans (PSP) (and preliminary scheduling) in the Sisu platform, and they upload those as a PDF file to the Moodle page to be accepted and commented on by their academic mentor. This procedure will be explained during the common academic mentoring event. PSPs will be revaluated during the second study year (second autumn).
Focus areas of guidance at different stages of studies are:
First autumn:
September:
Getting to know students
Ensuring sufficient information in terms of starting the studies and progressing in them.
November/December:
Ensuring sufficient information about obligatory and optional studies during the first spring.

Mistä on kyse?
Kokeilun tavoitteena on selvittää, miten varhaiskasvatuksen opettajaopintojen kolmannen opintovuoden pakollisten opintojen suorittaminen olisi mahdollista järjestää niin, että osa-aikatyö varhaiskasvatuksessa olisi mahdollista ja se tukisi opiskelijan asiantuntijuuden kehittymistä. Kokeilun kautta opiskelijoille tarjoutuu mahdollisuus päästä vahvistamaan käytännön pedagogisia taitojaan, syventämään osaamistaan ja käyttämään vahvuuksiaan. He saavat kokemusta pedagogisen toiminnan suunnittelusta, toteuttamisesta ja arvioinnista. He pääsevät myös seuraamaan, miten ryhmän toiminta, vasut ja varhaiskasvatuksen strategiset tavoitteet nivotaan yhteen toimintavuoden ajan syksystä kesän alkuun.
Mitä Helsingin kaupunki odottaa sinulta?
Teet töitä varhaiskasvatuksen opettajan tehtävässä yhdessä kokeilussa mukana olevassa päiväkodissa ja samassa lapsiryhmässä koko kokeilun ajan. Opettelet ohjaamaan tiimiäsi pedagogisessa suunnittelussa, toteuttamisessa, arvioinnissa ja kehittämisessä yhdessä toisen varhaiskasvatuksen opettajan kanssa. Olet mukana varhaiskasvatuksellisessa vuoropuhelussa, lapsiryhmäsi toimintakulttuurin ja oppimisympäristön rakentumisessa. Tutustut huoltajien kanssa tehtävään yhteistyöhön. Vahvistat ryhmän varhaiskasvatuksellista osaamista ja pedagogista opettajaresurssia. Olet yhdessä tiimikaveriesi kanssa rakentamassa lapselle hyvää päivää.
Minkälaisesta työsuhteesta on kyse?
Työtä on 10 työpäivää / kuukausi. Työpäivä ajoittuu kello 8–16 välille. Suunnittelet kuukauden työpäiväsi yhdessä päiväkodin johtajan kanssa. Työajasta on varattu pedagogiseen suunnitteluun yhdessä ryhmän toisen varhaiskasvatuksen opettajan kanssa aikaa vähintään 4 tuntia kuukaudessa. Palkkasi on 1428,2 e/kk (2 856,45 e/kk – 50 %).

PED003 Opetuksen suunnittelu, toteutus ja arviointi I 5 op
Tai aiempien OPSien vastaavat opintojaksot.
Miten opiskelijat valitaan?
Heidän tilalleen valitaan satunnaisesti samasta hakijajoukosta uusia opiskelijoita, joiden hakukelpoisuus tarkistetaan. Tätä menettelyä jatketaan, kunnes ryhmän enimmäismäärä on täytetty.
Mikäli ryhmää ei saada tällä menettelyllä täyteen, valintaa jatketaan muiden hakijoiden joukosta, kunnes enimmäismäärä täyttyy tai kelpoisia hakijoita ei enää löydy.
Jos ryhmän enimmäismäärä täyttyy ennen kaikkien hakijoiden opintojen tarkistamista, jäävät loput opiskelijat varasijalle. Varasijalta on mahdollista päästä mukaan ryhmään, mikäli paikka vapautuu ennen lukuvuoden 2024-25 alkamista. Vapaat paikat täytetään hakijoiden joukosta satunnaisesti kuvatun menettelyn mukaisesti.
Valitulla opiskelijalla on mahdollisuus peruuttaa osallistumisensa hankkeeseen.

Opiskelutahti
Opintojen suositeltava suoritustahti on 60 op/lukuvuosi, 30 op/lukukausi.
Opintojen laajuus

Jokaiselle opiskelijalle nimetään ohjaava opettaja eli HOPS-ohjaaja maisteriopintojen alussa. HOPS-ohjaukseesi sisältyy sekä ryhmäohjausta että yksilöohjausta.
Jos tarvitset opintojen suunnitteluun (esim. opintojen sisältö, valinnaiset opinnot, oman asiantuntijuuden kehittäminen, työelämään suuntautuminen) liittyvää ohjausta, voit ottaa yhteyttä omaan ohjaavaan opettajaasi. Käytäthän helsinki.fi -sähköpostiosoitettasi asioidessasi yliopiston henkilökunnan kanssa.
Voit tarkistaa, kuka ohjaava opettajasi on Sisussa: siirry kohtaan Omat tiedot - Ryhmät.
